Medication Stuff | Autism PDD

It sounds like you and your doctor have very different basic philosophies about medicating.  Is it possible to get a second opinion?  Are there any therapists in the picture to systematically give him the skills he needs to cope without medicine?

I share your basic philosophy, and so far we've done fine without medicine, so I'm afraid I don't have any experience to share.  I hope you get the answers you're looking for.

Good luck with everything.

We saw Collins developmental ped today for our usual follow up.  Collin is currently on risperdal .25 mg a day.  He has improved immensly which is awsome but I hate hate hate the fact that he is on such a potent med.  Hubby and I really want him off bad.  We want him to learn how to cope with his issues on his own so he does not have to be on this medication forever.  If he doesnt learn now when will he learn??

So we went to the appt today and the first thing that comes out of the drs mouth is we should double the dose to .5 mg.  We just sat there and figured we would ignore him because we really disagree.  Then he said it even might have to be raised higher later on

I dotn want my son completly dependant on this medication.  Yes it helps him cope and his behaviors decrease but is it worth it??

I am just at such a loss what is the best thing to do for my child.  Hubby is in agreement with me that we should stop.  But i know that if we do it will be a long hard road.  But i have faith that Collin will do good and can learn to take control of himself.  I just know that we will get some backlash from doc though if we do.  I also dont want to harm Collin more by stopping something that is helping.  But its not without risks, whether they be rare or not.
