Is the state as terrible as everyone is saying?
I'm not sure... I'm in NW St. Johns county (suburb south of Jax) and my son goes to one of the public schools here... I don't really know how or what to compare... my son attends the ESE Special needs pre-k class right now (8-2 M-F)... he gets ST (2x week-30 min), OT (2x week-30 min) and music therapy (1x week-30 min). We also go to another ST (1x week-1 hour) but we pay for that.
It seems like when he was dx, I expected more help... I really feel like 1 hour of speech is not enough...1 hour of OT is not enough, etc.... I would really like ABA, but it seems so expensive, we are looking for ABA summer camps though. I'm also thinking about ABA private school too... but then again, the costs involved are high.

I have heard from others that Duval is not good... but I've also heard that about the school my son attends... what do I believe? I don't know... I think I'm happy with where we are at... do I want more? Yes-I wish I could get more help. But I'm not sure, maybe my son is getting all he needs... I wish I had a crystal ball to tell me if I was doing right by him.

here are links to the ABA private schools that I know of:

there's also a Autism Society of Jax Yahoo group, let me know if you need that link...

When I lived on Amelia Island Payne went to the elementary school there - he loved it. I thought that the teachers/aides and bus drivers were great. He was only 3, but he looked forward to it. He went to school 4 whole days and his teacher would rotate students homes on Fridays. I am in Jacksonville also.  Would you please send the link to me if it is not too late.  thanks!Rubyruby..where in jax are you?

I'm in Jax, too- Please pass on the link.

mikki- I'm also in NW St. John's county.  What school does your son attend?  My 3 yr old is at CCE in the PreK autistic class. Thought we might be neighbors
We are considering a move to the Jacksonville area- anything within 50 miles.

Do you have an idea on public/ private schools - where we should look

Is the state as terrible as everyone is saying?

We have 5 kids from 9 to 6 months- and the job would enable me to be home more- But I can not sacrifice his well being

Any help or thoughts?

Hi Kris. Well, I wouldnt say the state of FL is bad when it comes to schools, just certain areas... As for Jacksonville, I havent heard very good things about the schools in Duval County. Im not sure about other counties. I am in the Yulee/Fernandina Beach area and it is about 30 miles from Jacksonville. My husband works at naval station mayport and he has to drive about 45 mins to work, but its worth it to live here instead of jacksonville. And the schools where I am, Nassau County, are really good. My son just started preschool and his teacher and aide are great. He is really enjoying it so far. He gets one on one occupational and speech therapy. I dont know much about the grade schools, but Im sure they are good too here. I am glad to have my son at a school here in this area as opposed to somewhere that isnt so great in jacksonville, esp since he has delays.. So, the trip for my husband to work is worth it in our opinion. Everyone is very friendly around here and there is a low crime rate. All I hear about on the news is Jacksonville crime. So, if you are considering moving to this area, I would definitely recommend Yulee or Fernandina Beach. Its basically the same area, yulee is just a little farther from the beach. Well I hope that helps some!

Thank you - and whether I make it or not, GOOD FOR YOU for putting the group together!
