Help with title 1 in NC | Autism PDD

Share

My son was enrolled in the New Hanover County "special Education" program for 3 year olds this past school year. We were required to reapply for the next school year at this pre-K center. His teachers thought that he could be mainstreamed and have adjusted his IEP accordingly. Problem is that I cannot get anyone to respond as to whether or not he has been accepted or will qualify for title 1 again next year. I was suposed to have a definite answer by June 2, 2005, but have heard nothing. He has been diagnosed with autism, PDD, and ADHD. I was told that with this diagnosis that he will qualify for title 1 for three years and then be reassessed.

I am very frustrated and am tired of getting the run around from  teachers, administrators and others in regards to this. If any one can offer any suggestions or information in regards to title 1 please let me know.

Thank You

First off, you need to write the school a letter, nicely but firmly asking for a response within a set amount of time (usually 10-15 days).  If they are still refusing to respond, you may have to go over their heads to the super or take it as a denial and move for a due process hearing.

2nd of all, this should have been answered in his IEP for the next school year.  Reassessment is typical done every 3 years, but IEP's are written yearly (or less) as they are the guidelines for goals that can be accomplished in 1 year.  Placement is part of the IEP.

With my son's 2nd pre-k IEP we didn't know the exact school he was going to (it was 1 of 2 choices and depending on which pre-k class had room) but we knew the times and when he would start.  For his kinder IEP we have the school, times, teacher, pullouts for therapy all set at his IEP meeting (with an OT evaulation being done in Sept/Oct).

Under Federal Law, the schools typically have 50-60 days (its changing) to evaulate and place/deny a child for special education services  The other thing you can do is call for an IEP meeting for placement (anyone on the team can ask for an IEP meeting and the shcool pretty much has to give it).  I had to call an IEP meeting during the summer last year for my son becuase we had not discussed placement in the fall for him when we did his IEP in February (we only discussed his spring placement).

jessesmom, good luck it seems as the school dist. do nothing in a timely manner. it takes them for ever to do anything and you get no answers in the meantime. my son is going to his school this fall into special education and it was a long drawn out 7 months and i still dont understand why it takes them this long.

so good luck and just keep buggin them. you need your answers
