Has your child ever been afraid of

something long after it's gone?

Parker is afraid to brush his teeth with his sister. For a while she had an electric toothbrush and the sound of it really scared him. I wouldn't let her brush her teeth near him, but he could still hear it and it scared him. Now, even though she hasn't had the tooth brush for months, he is still afraid to be in there when she is brushing her teeth. He has such a hard time with his sister because she is so loud and unpredictable for him. Anyone elses child have fears like this?

My kid was like that -- still is to a much less degree at 12.  They tend to learn by concrete experiences and sometimes once they make certain associations about a situation, it's hard for them to understand that variables can make that situation different.

Which, that trait is not peculiar to them.  It's just easier for the rest of us to understand and believe that a situation will be different next time because we aren't as strongly influenced by our concrete experiences as they are.

Over time, he learned to trust that I won't lie to him -- so now, when I tell him that X will be different this time because Y, he trusts me and tries X, again.

Of course, in this particular situation, since you say his sister is noisy and unpredictable, you may have a hard time convincing him that if he goes in the bathroom with her when she's brushing her teeth, she won't make that irritating noise again.

You will probably see this same concept -- this reliance on the concrete -- manifest itself in all kinds of ways -- particularly language.

my boy is scared of remote controlled (walking) robots. immediately escapes from the room if it is turned on! he is scared of small train too but isn't scared of remote controlled cars...

My son was afraid of the PC game operation,he played it once, then he talked about it for days, asking "is it on",I would say, No ,it cant just come on by itself,  I dont think he understands how the computer works yet.I ended up throwing it out so he could see it was gone,He still talks about it sometime.
