I can share what I have, and what I'm looking at, to give you some ideas. I'm not an expert by any means yet...
My son C is mainstreamed in kindergarten. He has a 1:1 aide for the entire time, plus speech 2x week, OT 1x week plus time in a resource room (not sure how many minutes). C's dx is autistic disorder, though the reeval team said they consider him high functioning. I'd describe speech/language issues as moderate/severe, social issues as moderate/mild and stim very mild.
At our reeval IEP last week, I requested that we discuss all of the options available for 1st grade, even though we will not make a placement decision until end of May. I asked for a description of all of the special classroom programs that would be possible fits for C next year. They gave the program names and descriptions to me, and over the next few months I am going to set up times to observe each of these programs so that when the placement IEP comes around I can have an informed opinion. I also plan on observing a regular 1st grade class, as mainstream with aide is also an option for next year.
I think having the 1:1 aide is a lifesaver for us. The primary reason C has an aide is because of his speech/language issues. C is very talkative, however he has trouble following complex verbal instructions. He is a strong visual learner (as am I!) One of the key functions of his aide is to break down multi-step verbal instructions into simpler steps and feed them to him as he works on a task. If C isn't understanding a task, the aide works to explain it to C in a way that he can understand the expectations. The aide also brushes C during story time to help him sit still and focus.
One thing to think about is that if your son is above grade level and bored, he should also be considered for GATE (Gifted and Talented Education). Just because a child is on an IEP doesn't mean he/she should not be considered for the gifted program as well.
We finally have gotten an IEP meeting set up to reopen the IEP for my 6 year old son with ASD (HFA) OCD, Anixety and Seizures...
I have no clue what I should ask for in the meeting and need any help with ideas because the way I believe its gonna be is I have to ASK there will be no OFFERS of what he needs.
We are in NC and have been told that they have TONS of programs Im just not sure of what I need to ask for.
Can you give me more info as to why you are reopening his IEP? What is his current placement (e.g. mainstream or special program)? Are you looking to change his placement?
Right now he is mainstreamed. I think he would do better if he had a little more one on one even if its just like 1 hour. He is extremely smart and is above his grade level and is bored. I'd also like some help if its even possible trying to get him to widen his topic right now he will figure out somehow to tie animals into ANYTHING he is suppose to be doing. Also we'd like speech and ot atleast because his handwriting is poor and really stresses him out. Other than that Im not sure of my options
