We have been using supplements for years. My son has been reacting to the latest protocal given bt our biomedical doctor. He was taking 30 pills a day. He has been engaging in self mutatlating behaviors. He bangs his head and he bites himself. He has also been stimming more than ever. He does a lot of things with his eyes and hands. He does a lot of head and body jerking movements. The meltdowns have become worse and he does a lot of ocd like behaviors. We took him off everything a few months ago. He has not changed in his behaviors. The doctor said he was obviously sensitive. Try a different combination. I have lost faith in the doctor and I am open to suggestions from parents with similar characteristics. I would also like to hear from parent who have tried virastop and olive leaf extract. This is my first time posting and I am open to all advice. Thanks ray' mom.
Hello Ray's mom,
My heart really goes out to you... sorry to say that I've never tried virastop or olive leaf exract.
I don't know what kind of pills you were getting from your biomedical doctor, but this is my story:
It's been exactly two years since my son Sammy was diagnosed with autism. Sammy just takes glyconutrients, which are all natural phytonutrients... AND it controls yeast overgrowth. Everyone around us is amazed at his improvements.
You can check out http://www-best-autism-help.com which I started working on last summer and still try to add more pages. Sammy had once displayed at least 90% autistic behaviors written about in books and magazines. But now most of his autistic behaviors are gone... but as you will see from the website, Sammy was not self-abusive (not included in the list of things he did that I wrote about).
Now he's in half mainstream kindergarten half special-ed. Although still slow in verbal skills, he is now bi-lingual and my goal is to be all mainstream in the next year or two.
Good Luck!
Behavioral analyst can do a full functional behavior assessment and try to find what triggers them.. maybe writing them down and see if they happen after eating a certain food , or change in environment-weather,schedules, illness/bowel problems, sensory issues ect..sometimes a yeast overgrowth can cause increase in behaviors and getting them under control can help.. we did Nystatin(prescription) for 6 months but the glyconutrients are natural and no prescription needed. I believe in supplements too and maybe tweaking the right ones will make a difference..ABA can do help behaviors tremendously one at a time but it is not a fast fix but a long term one. Good luck to you!
Blessings,
Shelley
If you're interested in a food supplementa approach I have friends who have had luck with the same product my children use for their autistic children. I'd be glad to hook you up. My best friend is a special education teachr and I have always been interested in helping parents with Autistic children. I believe this product is an awesome opportunity for you .... due to the awesome product there is an awesome business.
And, have you made sure there is no amonia smells in the house? Amonia can tend to set off Autistic rages.
Dear ray's mom,
My heart goes out to you. heres what I would do - get a referral to a developmental pediatrician (if you haven't already done so), seek a DAN doctor (Biomedic options are worth exploring), get ABA and whatever services you can get.
Often if theres a history of antibiotics, restricted feeding, .. its worth exploring an antifungal like Nystatin and maybe worth going CFGF. Start with milk free- almond breeze by blue diamond is a pretty good alternative. kirkman labs - spectrum complete and cod liver oil byNordic labs are good supplements to continue, then add on others.
best book amongst the many for Biomedic is - "have we done everything for this child" - Baker & Pangborn, worth buying. Other I liked was J. Mccandless book. Karen serioussi's book I would put behind these two in terms of what I got, but it is easy to read and very meaningful as well.
For behavioral Intervention - the Me Book by I.O. Lovaas (pioneered ABA). I think the video tapes with the book are over priced and not worth investing in, but the level of problems you are facing you might consider borrowing from library) & also "behavioral Intervention for Young children with Autism' by maurice, green & Luce.
GOOD LUCK
Sandy
