Eval Meeting Results | Autism PDD

Had ASD Results meeting

& it went just the way I thought it would.  They of course said oh no he doesnt qualify.  He has a lot of issues but because he can cope pretty well at school he wont qualify.

In our district and at his age he doesnt need to qualify on if it effects him educationally only developmentally.  Every time I would ask a question they would either give me some lame answer (which wasnt really an answer) or side step the question.  We had taken what they saw from the rough draft at the last meeting and plugged it in with their requirements.  They argued that it doesnt matter and that again because he can manage pretty well at school its all good.

Ugh ugh ugh.  I cant say it enough its so frustrating!  That he is improving with his social skills and is more tuned in to whats around him.  He is asking for help and does pretty good with adults.  That makes it where he isnt asd according to them ahhhhh.  They say he fits the qualifications for communication and sensory.  Two months ago they claimed he had no sensory problems, now all of a sudden he has a lot of them.  WTH???  They say he doesnt qualify under repetitive behaviors, even though they have seen him stim, vocally and with his hands, although they wont admit thats what it is.  Because he doesnt do it in school it doesnt exist.  And get this they say he has no social problems that he is age appropriate.  WHAT????  So my hubby asked well does he play with kids at school and they say well he parallel plays.  Um how is that social??  And he prefers adults or older children such as teenagers.  Well he will follow around some of teh teenage helpers in his class but have nothing to do with the kids.  How is that normal??

Oh and get this they were telling me about a time he got picked on.  UM at 3 years old he is already getting picked on.  A group of the girls, who have a click - yea in preschool there is a click- decided they would group up and splash him with water at the sensory table.  It was a malicous act on their part, the teacher even said so.  Oh and because he said "stop" to them, its considered problem solving, therefore he is not autistic. ACK!

So I got fed up and almost burst into tears and had to leave the room during this time my hubby ripped them one lol.  Or so he said.  So when I came back  they were trying to educate him on PDD-NOS.  Saying that it could be an anxiety disorder, or adhd and those are part of pdd-nos.  Is that true?? I have never ever heard of that.

Oh and they tried to mention the emotional disturbance thing and i said I would never ever agree to that.  Oh and then they tried to say it could be an emerging mental disorder.  Because my husbands mom is Bipolar that he may infact be displaying symptoms of that.  I think not.  geez

So after she was trying to drill us and not so nicely I interrupted her and said "you know what im done with this I want to get an ouside evaluation"

Hahahahaha you should have seen it.  They immediatly stopped talking the room was silent for such a long time.  Oh and then they acted like they have never heard anyone say it before.  Oh well we dont know how to do that blah blah blah.  They actually had to call their supervisor because they were so baffled.  It was a riot.  YOu cant tell me out of the 4 people working there that no one has ever had to deal with that.  So anyways im about to just pull him so we dotn have to deal anymore.  Im so stressed from it and he doesnt even like it.  Ok rant over

that sounds horrible, I am so sorry. Keep us posted on what happens next

Get an advocate or lawyer.  If your District is ONLY giving services if a child has academic issues, that is against the law.  The term "educational" refers to much more than academics. Below is the NYS definition of "education."  I don't have one for your state, but it must conform to IDEA 2004, on which the NYS definition is based. Find this out for YOUR state.  It will help immensely.  Get professional help now or your little boy will miss out.

(3) For purposes of this definition:

(i) The individual needs of a student shall be determined by a committee on special education in accordance with the provisions of section 200.4 of this Part upon consideration of the present levels of performance and expected learning outcomes of the student. Such individual-need determinations shall provide the basis for written annual goals, direction for the provision of appropriate educational programs and services and development of an individualized education program for the student. The areas to be considered shall include:

(a) academic achievement, functional performance and learning characteristics which shall mean the levels of knowledge and development in subject and skill areas, including activities of daily living, level of intellectual functioning, adaptive behavior, expected rate of progress in acquiring skills and information, and learning style;

(b) social development which shall mean the degree and quality of the student's relationships with peers and adults, feelings about self, and social adjustment to school and community environments;

(c) physical development which shall mean the degree or quality of the student's motor and sensory development, health, vitality, and physical skills or limitations which pertain to the learning process; and

(d) management needs which shall mean the nature of and degree to which environmental modifications and human or material resources are required to enable the student to benefit from instruction. Management needs shall be determined in accordance with the factors identified in each of the three areas described in clauses (a)-(c) of this subparagraph

Good for you for asking for an outside evaluation!

I have a very strong feeling this is going to happen in my middle son's meeting as welll, and I'm going to do the same!

I am so sorry this went so badly!  Yuck!  GOOD for you in requesting the outside eval.  this situation is the perfect example of when one is needed.

It sounds like you are staying very strong, and like you are using your frustration to motivate you towards getting things done RIGHT.  Keep us posted.

THis is all so familiar.  My son is 10 and was just diagnosed PDD NOS.  We are getting the very same run around.  You must be dealing with the same people.  They tried to make me feel like I made this up even though I had the doctor's letter in front of them.  THey even asked me how the doctor made the diagnosis.  It is so frustration.I know how you feel. It seems we are in the same boat our children seem the same.. My son is 3 1/2 and the same thing is happening.. They keep telling me no he can not be on the spetrum.. I to and fed up he is doing well in school i am having most issues at home but yesterday he had his first meltdown in front of his teacher so i hop ethey can se what i am talking about.. i just wrote letters to the school asking for them to do a functional behavior assessment on him and i also wrote to them to do a OT becase in jan they sai dthey screened him and he did not warrant a eval.. So i went privatley to get one done and the report states that he needs ot so now i want them to do one to prove them wrong.. I am still learning all this i hope everything works out fo ryou and your son.. It seems to me at least with my distric they only give the services to the kids that are severely autistic. They look at me like i am crazy even though i have a dignosis..
