IEP meeting HELP | Autism PDD

Have you tried using an advocate ? What do they say to you when you tell them what goals you want? You can file a due process if they are not agreeing with you...

This board is great, I'm sure that you will get alot of advice from others.

Ask for an Independent Educational Evaluation for OT and for anything else you think he needs.  The District HAS to pay.  Also, IDEA 2004 has a HUGE emphasis on independent living now, so ANY practical skills your child lacks really has to be put in the IEP or the school district can be blamed. I concur with the pp...get an advocate.I would call an avocate and have them go to the meeting with you. I was advised to do that from a special ed teacher friend of mine. They can request the independent evaluation for you.We have a IEP meeting tuesday I'am use to them I've been fighting them for 5 yrs++  But I'am worn out. My son was denied ot saying he gets it in the classroom Well he does not.. They don't brush teeth they don't comb hair he can't button, zip, hold a pencil the right wat ect... All of he's daily life skills He needs ot I don't know how to do it .please any advice would help!!!!!

Well i'm going to do it I'm gonna go in there and tell them my son needs to know how brush he's hair, teeth, button and zip and dress himself and how to hold a spoon or a pen. to be able to use siccors ect...

Wish me luck !!!!

Ask for an OT evaluation (put this in writing).  They HAVE to evaluate if you ask for it. If the school's evaluation comes back as your son not needing help, ask them to pay for an Independent Educational Evaluation.  By law, they CANNOT say no.  They can either say yes or they HAVE to take you to an expedited Hearing at which time the HEARING OFFICER will force them to pay for an outside evaluation AND charge them for the court costs.  This will be FAR more expensive to them than paying for the eval.  Getting an outside opinion doesn't guarantee that they'll FOLLOW that opinion, but it gives you a leg to stand on if you should take them to a hearing yourself.

I agree with the use of an advocate...

But if for some reason this isn't an option, let us know so that we can all brainstorm some more...

I also would recommend getting an Advocate. I used one the first time just a few weeks ago, and she made world of difference in setting the tone of the meeting and getting what my son needed.

I hope i have time to get one the meeting is tuesday !!!

THANKS FOR ALL YOUR ADVISE

"Table" means you stop the meeting at the point where you feel uncomfortable and suggest that the Team come up with a date at which to reconvene.  If everyone has to get back to their calendars first, tell them fine, let me know the new date.  Then, find an advocate, pronto, and go over what was said.  In fact, ask NOW if you can tape the meeting you're going to Tues.  You have to give the IEP Team notice in case they want to tape it themselves, too.

and then "table" the meeting

I don't know what this means ???

I'am going to do the meeting I just have to get mad before i go that always workls for me then i can really ramble with them for WHATS BEST FOR MY  SON soo ant and all advise will help !!!

"table" means that you go and go thru the motions, but you don't sign off on the IEP...basically leaving it open for you to add a parental addendum to it. I, personally, would use an advocate...I have in the past persisted to the point that everyone that came into contact w/ Payne in a day (including his daycare) would be there plus the psychologist...she really didn't like me after that ... You can ALWAYS postpone an IEP meeting.  They HAVE to meet at a time convenient for the parents (within reason, of course).  To postpone until you can get good advice might be the thing to do.  However, you can always meet without an advocate and then "table" the meeting if you think it's not going your way.  At least, if it DOES go your way, you will not have wasted time.
