That is great!!!!!! I have those brushes, I don't use them so much anymore. The boys like the deep pressure. We play pillow, that came from the OT too. I take the small square couch pillow, put over their tummy and apply light pressure. Its similiar to the dep pressure. Its a game, they love it. and it help calm them. I've been looking into the weighted blankets, they are expensive. The OT use to have a weighted turtle that the boys would hold when they were upset. I've been trying to find something like that too.
So happy for you both! I'm sure it will help!
Yay!!
The hospital that dx Sharlet called today. They have just hired a new OT to work in pediatrics. Sharlet will see her once a month to deal with sensory stuff. They will teach me some techniques such as brushing, deep pressure and try to help with some things like weighted blanket etc.
The physio just started the other day as well. The woman was very nice, she did a two hour assessment and said that Sharlet is a long way behind. She said that she is not meeting all the motor skills milestones for a two year old yet. She told me that Sharlets problems with motor skills has several causes, she has very weak muscles and alot of that is because she has a seperate condition which causes her ligaments to be too loose so everything is hyper mobile, this means that when she tries to use her muscles for things that require strength, her ligaments over extend and she cant get leverage. They can't fix the ligament problem, she's just built that way, but they can try to strengthen her muscles by using exercises on a fit ball and swimming in their therapy pool. The other issue is that she has poor motor planning, she doesn't seem to be able to tell her body what to do and get it to respond sometimes.
Hopefully the physio and OT will be able to help us improve these things for Sharlet so she can catch up to her peers a bit and be able to join in on more things with them at childcare. Anyway I'm just really glad that she will be getting these services, even if it is only once a month.
THis is great news!! Thanks for sharing.

That is so great for Sharlet, Sarah loved the GIANT ball and I would sit her on it and bounce her while trying to keep the ball between my knees sitting on the couch...we both got a workout:P We never got OT...I hear kids really love it so I hope Sharlet gets her muscles & motor planning exercised:)
Blessings!
Shelley
That is some great news you got there. Hope all goes excellent for you twoGreat news!
Great!
See if you can get her some private PT as well--Jaden graduated out of PT fairly quickly--her muscle tone improved greatly in about 5 months!
Just wanted to update. I had the first meeting with the EI people last night, Some positive things will be happening this year.
1. The teachers are in the process of being trained in floortime and will be offering it this year.
2. The autism consultant is going to the USA for a month to work with some of your best minds to see what else she can do for our kids this year and next.
3. I am being put in a program called more than words, currently there is only 8 kids in my state in the program. The woman running it is meant to be amazing at getting kids with autism speaking. we all think Sharlet is showing signs that she is ready to start speaking.
4. The autism consultant told me that she has worked with over a thousand kids with autism in her career and she can tell me with confidence that she doesn't think that Sharlet will remain moderate-severe as her dx says. She thinks that she will end up presenting as HFA by the time she is 6 yrs or so. This was amazing to hear, as she is the first person to really say that(who has met Sharlet) and I really do respect her experience.
5. They will be offering some home visits this year. Allegra39141.8331365741
Oh, God, Allegra - you must have gotten goosebumps when you heard those words. I swear, I did. I can just imagine how much hope that has given you. Do you have many details about the more than words program? I'd love to know what it is.
Things are looking up for you and Sharlett - I'm sure you can't wait to hear her speak, and it seems a bit inevitable now!
Congratulations - I'm thrilled for you.
That is great. Adam's OT was the best thing he ever had. Good news. You'll have to share with us any new tips. That is just fantastic news! There really are so many things you can do at
home with the proper guidance from an OT. You can devise helpful
activities for her to do in her play yard as well (I remember the pics you
posted) The Out of Sync Child Has Fun might be a good book to bring
to OT with you, so the therapist can help you pic some appropriate games to
play that will also help Sharlet. Jasper loves OT, and adores his therapist. It
has been really beneficial! (He also had many problems with motor planning
and gross motor skills) Good luck! This is an answered prayer! How wonderful. YOur work with Sharlet, so far, has helped her SO much. She is doing really well. Imagine how much better she'll do once you get just a little more help. Great going!
