Thanks

Julie

I am from the Twin Cities originally but live in Norway now.  Sorry I can't help, but I do know of two on this board who live there.  Hopefully they'll see your post.  There's also a recent topic called something like "where is everybody from?".  You could also try to use the search button on the top of this page to search for Minnesota, Twin Cities, etc.

Good luck with everything!

We are moving there in June - but I don't know much about services right now. I do know there are others who live there though! I have heard good things about Fraser (sp?) - you might want to check there. I don't know what your insurance covers though...

I live 3 hr from the cities and I hav taken all 3 of my boys to Fraser Child and Family Center in Mpls.

I got a medical dx there even though they are not a medical facility they qualifiy for a medical dx I checked.

They have been around for along time here is the web site http://www.fraser.org/ feel free to pm me if you have questions

I have more I just have to find the rest of my list:)

Karolysgirl - I may be contacting you soon then! Do you know anything about the quality of special ed services in the Prior Lake/Shakopee/Savage area? That is where we may be looking. Originally, we were looking at Apple Valley as I have heard tremendous things about the services there. But, it will be a very long commute for dh - so we are looking at other areas. We can't afford Eden Prairie (where ds will be working).

I live in St. Paul, and am an autism teacher in Maplewood.  I provide private tutoring and consulting services when I have time in my schedule.

www.ausm.org is the website for the MN Autism Society, you can get a very thorough list of resources from there.  They also put out a booklet of service providers including dentists, therapists, etc. who are experienced in working with ASD.  The booklet is free for the asking but I had to call them to get it, phone number is on the site.

You might try this website, which includes parents' reviews of schools all over the country.  It's really extensive.  Some of those parents might mention special ed services in the school districts you're considering.

Here's another website to find schools, but I don't think it includes parent reviews.

Good luck.

Snoopy,

I just wanted to let you know that my pediatrician and a friend of my sister's who lives here as well both said Edina and Wayzata (sp) school districts are the best.  We are in Eagan, which is part of burnsville, Apple Valley District 196.  I have yet to see my son's IEP.

Thanks for your reply.  I will keep you posted.

Julie

good luck with your move.

Hi Snoopy,

I wonder if we have talked already???  I agree Apple Valley is very good and at least two of their staff were in the same Master's program with me, and we worked on some of the same projects and classes together.  I honestly don't know much about Shakopee- etc, it is quite far from me.  Eden Prairie is indeed expensive. What I would do is a google search with the town name you want and school district as the key words.  Then find the district website for the town you are interested in and look up ASD services in that district.  If none are listed that tells you something...

You often have to look under individual elementary school names, or under "special services" to find the info, but the districts that have good programs have some information there.  I liked that Apple Valley has the state regulations referenced right on their district website.

Thanks! Edina is WAY out of our price range. I don't know about Wayzata - haven't looked there. We may just have to move where we can afford and then move again when we can afford more - NOT that I want to do that! It is such a sticker shock since our house payment will almost double (and trust me, my dh's salary won't!).

Karolysgirl -

We probably have talked as I started obsessing about this last fall when it became evident we would be moving to the Cities. Now that the move is getting closer and we are putting the house on the market - I am panicking! And I can't remember (or find) anything that I took down about where good places to go are.

My plan is to try to attend a support group soon up in the Cities and get info from a bunch of parents. Thanks for your help!

This autism shop is located in Hopkins, MN.  Maybe you can find some information there.  They apparently run workshops where you could presumably meet other parents, but the website says there are no workshops scheduled at this time.

Hello,

I live in Mpls.  My son was recently diagnosed with PDD-NOS , we went to the Alexander Center in Eden Prairie, a part of Park Nicollett.  We are also getting a second opinion at Fraser, I have heard they are great!

I would for sure reccommend Fraser!!
