Travelling on an airplane | Autism PDD

Unfortunately what works for one kid doesnt work for another and you know your kid best.... his likes and dislikes tolerances and so forth.  There is a jet sound here http://www.getrelaxed.com/044.htm to get him prepared for the noise. I did this with my son when I had to prepare him for a plane trip I wasnt able to attend with him as his donor came to take him for a visit. I sent all his favorite items to keep him occupied we even role played the plane take offs and landings. You may also want to phone ahead to the airlines and explain his situation maybe they have some ideas or accommodations in how he loads on and off the plane. Try to make sure he gets plenty of rest and  make sure you are there with extra time so he isnt too stressed out rushing but not too much extra time so he is bored

Check with what is permissable with the airposrt security checks and see if you can have someone else either check in for you and then you go last minute or you check in for both of you and someone bring him last minute it may work better. ENJOY

MsSteelersFan38521.8167708333By the Way....... ear plugs for him might help and also make sure he has a lolipop or juice drink water something to suck on during take off and landing or gum to chew to help pop his earsYes the drinks, earplugs, and lollipops for takeoff and landing are good ideas.
We also take a few books, and the best ever gift I ever gave my grandson, a portable DVD player.
It has helped even more with the lines and delays at the airports.
We just sit him down, and let him watch a movie.
Also pecs of the entire trip are very helpful.
Even though my grandson is verbal, it is great re-inforcement.
He has always been good on planes, but expect the unexpected.
We were told to turn off the electronic devices for landing, and then circled the airport for 1/2 hour, at which point the entire plane could hear my grandson yell,  Tell the pilot to stop the plane right now. I want to get off".
He repeated this several times, and luckily at this point the plane did finally come in for a landing.

I have flown long distances with my kids practically since they were born. OFten the flights are 5-6 hours long. One good thing is they can't throw you off mid flight!

Good luck, Renee

I am taking Joe on an airplane for the first time and I have no idea what to expect...I dont know how I am going to even get him to sit down for the 5 hour trip. he does ok on car trips but thats cuz he can stare out the window at everything going by..

Anyone done this before? Do you have any advice/tips?

Thanks

I hope that helped. Good luck!

Thanks everyone

What was suggested to me, is to make surprise bags.  Just put a couple dollar toys into a bag, make whole bunch of bags.  This is to supplement the normal comfort toys child picks out.

Gummy worms to eat to help with pressure/ears popping.

Watch out for juice boxes, etc they can explode with the change of pressure!  Make sure you put in ziploc bag.

****Ask to sit near bulk head!!!  This is usually reserved for tall ppl or mothers with infants because bassinets can be put there.  Which means more space for child to play on floor!  I called up the airline and explained situation and they said that we will get the space unless there is mother with infant.

I think it really depends upon the flight and how many people are on it.  Now Gabe, lol, I know where he would want to sit.  In the cockpit
