Has she done a full OT eval? Ask that they send you ALL the written reports within 5 business days of the meeting. Postpone the meeting if you don't feel ready. Read the report and get EVERYTHING explained. If the OT did not give a standardized test, postpone the IEP meeting until such a test can be performed and evaluated. If it still comes back as no OT for next year, ask that they pay for an Independent Educational Evaluation (your choice of outside evaluator). It's possible he really DOESN'T need more OT, but I wouldn't necessarily trust the school's eval, especially if your observations of your son's performance leave you without confidence in his current level of performance. I already asked for the reports because I thought this would happen. It's not OT they are recommending for discontinuation, it's social work.
Well, they tried to discontinue social work but I wouldn't let them. He will still get social work. They wanted to do it as a consult basis only, which basically means when the social worker is working with other kids in his room she'll glance over at him and see what he's doing. That's me being sarcastic, obviously not how they explained it but that's how I read between the lines. Anyway, I wouldn't go for the consult basis only, so he'll get 30 minutes. They were very open to the social/emotional goals we presented. The case manager from his home ABA program went with me.
They said he is very compassionate and frequently encourages the other children with a "you can do it" or "good job". If another child falls or hurts themself, he rushes to their side to see if they're ok (he was doing this over the weekend because his big brother is sick - Frankie was on the couch and Anthony was rubbing his arm and picked up his juice box and held it to his lips - it was so darn cute).
His speech goals are changed to focus on his articulation issues because there was no goal for his articulation in this first IEP. His langauge skills have improved so much - they are still not perfect so they'll be spending time on both.
Otherwise, the meeting went well. Everybody agreed that his first IEP was not written very well and the goals are written much better this time around. He is really progressing and has actually learned things while there. They have been writing their names which he has learned and likes to do at home as well. He also recognizes a few words by sight like "yes" and "no" which is directly related to an activity in the classroom. I'm so happy he is learning in a regular ed environment.
His birthday is in September but after September 1st so he still has one more year of preschool. He will be fully evaluated again before kindergarten. The general feeling of all at the meeting is that they expect him to fully mainstream by kindergarten. We shall see......
I picked up Anthony's report card today. They included information from ST, OT and the social worker. The social worker put on her report that he's doing wonderful and she's going to suggest discontinuation of services. UUGH!!!! His IEP is in one week!
