Hmmmm - John Travolta | Autism PDD

Share

From what I can gather kawasaki syndrome/disease appears to have NO similarities with autism. So either their son has autism or something that can be associated (eg fragile x), or shows a lot of signs and they used the wrong term. Or he has kawasaki syndrome and there's been some misreporting. Either way, if he's going to talk about his daughter he shouldn't feel ashamed to talk about his son.

John's brother Joey is extremely involved in the autism community.  Here is a book that he wrote the forward to http://www.actorsforautism.com/Page3.html

I believe Joey is John's beard where it comes to autism support, since scientology won't allow him to acknowledge the disorder.  A few years ago, Connor attended an autism camp at UCLA, and Joey was there, helping the kids film and edit their experience.  He has a filmmaking and acting workshop here in L.A. for special needs kids, with it's focus is mainly for kids on the spectrum.

Travolta son's diagnosis:
Science vs. Scientology?

John Travolta and Kelly Preston
John Travolta and Kelly Preston are raising their son, Jett, as a good Scientologist, but some wonder if the 14-year-old is the worse for it.

The Travoltas have said Jett suffers from Kawasaki syndrome, an illness characterized by high fever, painful rash and lymph-node swelling. Preston has said they've traced the disability to "environmental toxins," specifically carpet-cleaning chemicals.

Three years ago, she told Montel Williams how she put Jett on a detox regimen based on the writings of Scientology founder L. Ron Hubbard. Within a few months, she said, "He ended up getting better," but still "has lots of allergies."

Others suspect Jett may suffer from something more serious — autism.

According to HollywoodInterrupted.com's Mark Ebner, that diagnosis has been corroborated by "no less than five sources (including a media rep from the Autism Society of America, an executive from Cure Autism Now, a major Hollywood producer and parent of an autistic child, and a Hollywood actor-parent)." Officials at two autism groups declined to discuss Jett's condition when we called yesterday.

If Jett is autistic, CultNews.com's Rick Ross suggests, Travolta and Preston may not have sought treatment because Jett "would have go to psychiatrists, and that would be contrary to the teachings of Hubbard." As it happens, Travolta's brother, Joey, has produced a new documentary about autism, "Normal People Scare Me," co-directed by high-functioning autistic teenager Taylor Cross and his mother, Keri Bowers.

Joey, a former special-ed teacher, initially agreed to talk to us, but didn't return calls by deadline. Nor did reps for Travolta or the Church of Scientology.

While Sylvester Stallone, Dan Marino and Doug Flutie, who have autistic children, have long championed research, a source told Ebner, "John Travolta has so far done nothing to help raise awareness about autism."

littlebopeep39120.6767476852I remember "back when" I used to work with autistic children (in L.A.)
Sylvester Stallone and his son's mother (Sasha?) were pretty active at least
locally with different autism charities and awareness groups. His son was
dx'd way before this "explosion" of autism, and may have gone under the
radar. I'm not celebrity crazy or anything, I'm just noting it for the
record...they were definitely open about his autism.Travolta and his wife Kelly Preston have said in official statements that their sons condition was caused by ingesting carpet cleaning fluids.

I'm surprised to read about Sylvester Stallone. I was always under the impression that he wasn't involved with that child. Just to add to the celebrity list singer Toni Braxton has an autistic son, Didi Cohen from Grease has an autistic child, and actor Aiden Quinn has an autistic child.

That is so sad.  Kawaski- I should've remembered that.  I was telling myself that it sounded like a snowmobile! LOL  Thanks so much for writing- it would've bothered me all night!

Now I have heard that his son Jett is autistic, but he denies it, due to his Scientology.

He was on Oprah today, and I am watching it now.  John talks all about his daughter, and shows tons of pics, but when Oprah brought up Jett, he blew off the subject and brought it back to Ella Blue.

Kind of strange.

I had heard that too and also had heard that Sylvestor Stallon has a son from an early marriage with severe autism but you never read about it.  I know the man who play the priest on "Mash" has a son with autism and wrote a book about him..can't think of the name. I always liked John Travolta..it is sad he has chosen not to bring autism awareness with his son but I guess privacy is huge and much more guarded in celebrities when it comes to their kids..with the camera paparatzi's(?) going crazy all the time you can't blame him. I hope his scientology doesn't prevent his son from getting therapy:(

Is it the same son that had the disease from the carpet shampoo?  I can't think of what is called now.  But I remember seeing Travolta's wife, Kelly Preston, on tv a while ago.  She was talking to other parents about symptoms and stuff and they figured out it had to do with the shampoo for the carpet cleaner.  Maybe he had autism then?  Or is it a different kid?  I am not sure...

mommaniki

it's the same kid - they use what is called kawasaki syndrome as the reason for his "uniquness" because scientology does not allow for psychologists, neurologists, etc.

Yes, Scientology does not ligitimize any Psych diagnosis, and since Autism is currently listed as a Psych dx, they don't recognize that it exists.  I am not sure if that means no therapy for him or not.

Also, yes, Kawasaki Syndrome can be caused by carpet cleaning shampoo.  My stepdaugther had it.  She is now 25 and has a few residule side affects.  She gets a rash in the sun and has to have her hear checked for murmurs.  She is doing well and just had her first child.  It as so rare, that when she was dx'd w it was on the news in their hometown in Iowa.  It is some sort of immune disorder.

Here's an interesting article on that with pictures of Jett when he was younger.

Here is a link to the Kawaski Disease.  Like I said, my stepdaughter had it.  There are no hx of any lasting effects beside heart problems.  So, if they say all of their childs problems are related to it, they are not speaking truthfully.

I don't usually buy it when celebrities are "diagnosed" with autism by members of the general public because so many people use Bill Gates as example of an Aspie, and he does not have Asperger's (for the record, I think Paul Allen does).  BUT...this whole Jett thing does seem probable.  If two autism groups are saying it, it must be pretty obvious with Jett once you see him in person.  Furthermore, I was unable to find any pictures of him as an older boy. I wonder if Scientologists go for speech/language therapy, and occupational therapy? He might be getting those kind of services that are not "psychologically" based.  Or maybe they do consider them psychologically based?I found it just very telling that the interview I saw, it was obvious (to me anyway) that John Travolta avoided the subject of Jett and always turned the conversation back to his daughter.  he is probably trying to keep from having to defend his sons "issues" if everyone believes its autism, but it doesnt fit his religon or whatever, then he doesnt want to fight over it... he may not get therapy persay but who knows if travolta has tutors and aids that help him, most of kylos therapy is play... so while they may not say he has autism whos to say hes not getting some help... i posted this befor. some people do not want to believe it is what it is, but we dont know what gos on behind closed doors. im sure hes not getting everything he can, but he is probably getting somthing. travolta and family have tryed to stay out of the light, at least that ive seen they are not all over the tv, and i watch alot. and the pics that were on the site of his son when he was younger wasnt enough to show me the "look" that i have noticed in alot of the pics you have of your kid, but it does show that he is loved... good for stallone and all the other stars for helping show awarness, but its not somthing everyone would do... just because he wont admit to what it probably is doesnt make him heartless... it makes him a parent in denial, or truly set in his beliefs. either way i do hope his family is doing well and that they all are happy, as it showed in his pics he was a happy kid

I have heard from a pretty credible source that Kevin Bacon's and Keirra Sedgwick's son is autistic too.  When they were at the Golden Globes (I think, one of those award shows lately) she got up to receive an award.  They panned and showed Kevin and their daughter in the audience.  The next day on ET in the back room, Mary Hart had her call her son on the phone to tell him she won.  It was a weird one sided phone call...I believe he's 16 now.
