Thanks for the information!  By the way, we are in Massachusetts.I know this is not what you're asking about, and maybe you've already heard of it, but I have such good things about RDI (Relationship Development Intervention) that I thought I would throw it out there for you. The books are relatively inexpensive so maybe it would be a viable alternative? http://www.rdiconnect.com/default.asp

Hi all.  I have a 9 year old with high functioning autism.  He has only been involved in social skills groups at school and those have been limited and not of great quality - he's made small progress.  I'd like to start him in an after school intense social skills program, but the cost is astronomical.  Is anyone aware of any financial aid programs for social skills groups?  Any assistance would be greatly appreciated.

I dont know if any of this will help but it may be worth checking into.............. Sometimes it helps to know where you are located.

SOME special needs schools for Developmentally Disabled or Mentally Retarded have a fmaily resource center. That would be a good place to start to ask for resources available in your area. Also ask your local department of jobs and family services, your local mental health facility, ask local churches who donate money  too.

Additional Resources

Regardless of the type of disability or health problem your child has, you can find help and support.

The Internet Resources for Special Children (IRSC) is a complete directory of web resources about children and disability.  You can find organizations and resources by type of disability, as well as information on laws, legal assistance, adaptive equipment, rehabilitation, and much more.  The amount of information at IRSC is truly remarkable.

Each state is home to at least one Parent Center (find yours at Parent Centers).  Parent centers -- often staffed by parents of disabled children --  serve families of children and young adults from birth to age 22 with all disabilities: physical, cognitive, emotional, and learning. They help families obtain appropriate education and services for their children, train and inform parents and professionals on a variety of topics, resolve problems between families and schools or other agencies,  and connect children with disabilities to community resources that address their needs.

You can find additional state and local organizations that serve disabled children by visiting the Children With Disabilities web site.
