introducing new foods for child with PDD | Autism PDD

I am currently working with a 6 yo boy w/ PDD who will only eat a very limited foods.  He will only eat specific brands of a hot dog, pb and j, potato chips, juice, a cookie and a brownie and skittles.  He is on a gluten- free diet and we are trying to introduce new foods to him.  If you even change the brand or present the food in a different way such as not cutting the pb and j sandwiches crust off and then cutting into squares, he will not eat it and often get upset.  He has a very sensitive sense of smell and doesn't like to be around and is upset by "smelly" foods.  we were thinking of making a picture book for him with different brands of foods he already likes like cookies and brownies and he will get to choose one he will try each day.  i also read that putting a new food on or near his plate with no expectation to eat it for a few days may help to get him used to it or having the child alternate a couple bites of the new food then getting to eat his normal food may help.  If anyone has any suggestions or success stories of what worked for them it would be greatly appreciated! thanks!
