Has anyone had success with RDI? Can you use this method in conjunctions with other methods like ABA and TEACCH? I am thinking of attending a two-day RDI workshop in June in Vancouver and would like to know if it might be worth while. Any ideas, comments would be appreciated

OK I am not sure what RDI stands for. Could someone help me out?Relationship development intervention I believe. I agree with"jdecina", I have been providing ABA therpay for almost
I attended the 2 day parent workshop more than a year ago. It seemed to make sense. I do some of it, not in any structured way. I practice RDI in everyday life. I never cut bread or anything for my son the same way. I make him read my face and stuff like that. My previous ABA consultant said we could not do it with ABA. I don't know if that is because of logistics for her or if one would interfere with the other. I think it's good.thanks!

Catharine,
I know "littlebopeep" uses RDI with her son and seems to be pretty excited about it. Perhaps if you pm her she might be able to tell you a little about her experience.
It is not something that CAN'T be done at the same time as ABA, but if you are using discrete trial, that takes up LOTS of time. Frankly, I think RDI is best for parents to implement. As you point out, it's really about a way to approach everyday life with your child. After all, the most important relationship ANY young child has is with his parents. Our ABA program actually has RDI lessons in the program. You can definately implement RDI into ABA. Our DTI does not take too much time. We organize our sessions so that DTI is part of the session but there is also time allotted for floortime, sensory activities and things like RDI. I'm sure there are ABA consultants who won't mix the programs as I know there are RDI consultants who won't come near a parent implementing ABA. It really depends on the consultant, but there if you find cooperative consultants I don't see any reason why both can't be implemented.
