MARCH 14th- DR PAULA KLUTH Participants will learn practical ways of supporting students with autism spectrum disorder (ASD) and other significant disabilities. Topics addressed include defining ASD, differentiating instruction in the diverse classroom, encouraging literacy development, making the classroom comfortable for all learners, and supporting behaviors and bodies of students with a range of needs. This interactive presentation will focus on the importance of pushing beyond participation and inclusion to asking schools to understand every student as a complex and capable learner. MARCH 15th- DR. JED BAKER Specific, user-friendly strategies and techniques for providing relevant social skills instruction to children and teens with ASD will be shared at this workshop. Enjoyable socialization methods are emphasized so individuals may experience success and desire to build skills. Social deficits affect life at home, school and eventually in the workplace. Conference participants will learn both highly beneficial strategies that can be used across a variety of settings and routines; and practical and effective solutions to assist ‘typical’ peers, family members and professionals to become more understanding, accepting and engaging of those with social difficulties.
