how do i apply and what documents am igoing to need?
best way to apply is to go in person to your ss office near you. online it takes longer and as documents you need all id cards, immunizations, ss cards, birth certificates, proof of income, lease of rent or morgage you pay , electricity and gas bill, phone bill and since you applying for your son you need all IEP's , letters from doctors stating his diagnosed and explaining his problem as well like developmental delay, social skills etc... if he is in a school you should get reports ,so take those also with you. i took everything saying my son had delays from doctor and all evaluations and he got approved in 2 months. the person who interviewed me said i went complete cause they dont have to be requesting documents all over and that speeds up the process a lot and it did for me.
so go in person and good luck!
So ... if I did get SSI for my youngest, that isn't something I would have to claim on my taxes?
I started the application on line, but didn't complete it yet.
if you get ssi you can claim your child as disabled of course. This is what I know if you meet the disabilitiy and income qualifications then you can receive SSI.
In MN if there are 2 parents in the home our assest can not exceed 00 once they do then it goes to my son's assests which can not go over 00. If this all happens yoy can spend down or be taken off.
They don't count your home or 1 vehicle if you have more then 1 and then they don't count the most expensive one. Also if you put money in a special needs trust for your kids ASD or NT then that money is not counted as an asset.
The monthly money you receive is for "living" I have never keep receipts for this. The only thing I have kept reciepts for was for my son's Dedicated Account.
Once you are accepted on SSI they go back to the month you applied and pay back from then to present. If the money they pay back with is over 00 I think then you need to create a Dedicated Account and keep every receipt for any spending you do with this account.
This money IS ONLY for the child's medical needs or needs that fit into their dx. So you can use it to pay past medical bills, for school, gas for appts. fix your vehicle if that is the vehicle the child rides in. House modifications if it is medically nessesry. Things like that. This money is NOT counted as income or an asset. But you can't deposit into it and HAVE to show that you are using this money for the child's dx needs.
I guess they do this because parents would get this big chunk of money and take a vaction so they put this clause on it.
Once a yr you will have to show where the money from this account has gone if you keep your receips no big deal and if you are not sure if what you want to buy is ok just call them.
Also once a yr you have fill out a paper showning where your monthly SSI checks go. This is NO big deal all you have to do is get your $ money number to match theirs and your fine.
You don't have to send in proof just play with the numbers till they match. They ask about monthly living expenses food education entertainment.
I hope this helps someone
I do not see why you cannot do the same for a minor-- If anyone knows if you can set up a trust for a minor, please let me know. Do any of you get SSI for your child? If you do can you please tell me if its true i can save upto ,000 in a bank account for him and the rest i need to save all receipts of everything we buy for him ? I plan on moving in 2 years ,is it possible to use part to buy things for his new room in that house we will move to? If you want to contact me PM me .. i know sometimes we keep things private! We just went and got our taxes done today. You do not have to claim SSI income on your taxes, in fact I even called Social Security and they said they dont even send out a form for underage children. My son jon has been on ssi for aliitle over 3 years and this is the first I every heaed of a tax credit for the disabiltityfrom his pdd -nos. I widh they gave parents like us more money thought the whole years. i reallt could use it.
