Our 2 YO PDD son has (per week):
1-2 hours of private speech therapy
2 hours of group speech therapy (works on speech and social skills)
2 hours of OT
1 hour of PT
2 hours of floor time coaching
20 hour home-based floor time therapy (done by good ol' mommy and daddy -- supervised, of course, by our floor time therapist) .
So that is about 28-29 hours per week. We figure that it equates to about 4 hours a day if you look at a whole week being 7 days. Being that he is only 2, anymore then 30/week is too much for him.
I think that most kids with ASD need at least about 25 hours a week in intensive therapy. That's a combination of ST, OT, ABA, floortime or whatever other methods you choose. Although 8 hours a day would be nice - kids this young nap-LOL! Most days DS get 2-4 hours/day of therapy. He gets 15 hours a week of ABA, 2 hours of speech/week, 2 hours of OT/week, and 5 hours of shadow time at daycare. But remember as your son starts getting therapy- you'll learn ways to create learning opportunites in everyday situation.Hi! I am the mother of a twenty seven month old little boy, and we are currently going through the diagnosis process. Right now Franklin recieves an hour of therapy a day. 30min. ST and 30min OT. He also has someone come out to our home and work one on one with him for an hour a week. We would like to start ABA when he gets an official diagnosis. I was talking to a retired professor the other day, and he told me that Franklin needed to be in therapy for eight hours a day. I am just seeking some advice, and if anyone has been there, what they did. I am doing this all on my own, and feel like I am not going to get any "real" help until he is diagnosed? Any suggestions? Thanks!
Wendy
well, I'm military and located where there are no services, but my plan of action is, get him as much as I possibly can and if it's too much, then I will make the appropriate adjustments(once we get back home that is) From what I understand, the amount of therapy varies depending on the particular child's needs. Some need more, some need less. Some respond better with more, some respond better with less.Thank you all for your input. We are looking at doing ABA through CARD, and they do about 30 hours in home therapy. Thanks Again!Whenever my son has done any speech therapy or OT or behavioural therapy, each of the therapists always say that his best learning is done at home in his own environment and I feel more comfortable at home too. They give me the tools to use and i continue at home with him in every situation because he is learning all the time. It is easy to say if you have all the time in the world and nothing else to do but teach your child. I just try and find a balance between external therapy and working with him at home.We did 20 hours a week for 4 months because this is what is reccommended for this age..Owen is also 27 months He started ABA at 18 mnths though. It was too much for him, and he would fall asleep in therapy. He is a good sleeper and needs his naps, 4 hours was just too long a stretch. He also was terrified of his bedroom, and refused to go in it with me to get dressed or anythign (this is where his therapy takes place) he now gets 2.5 hours a day, and he loves it..Smiles when he sees her, he has mastered several skills..when it was 4 hours a day, he didn't master anything..I think each child is different..definatly try the reccommended hours..if he is cool with it..then keep it up! We will increase Owens amount again in the fall to see if he can tolerate longer.
