Exceptionally beautiful? | Autism PDD

Share

I've got a small face, which includes a small chin. I don't think I'm particularly good looking, though.

I think my son is gorgeous!  However I do get stopped often and told how handsome/beautiful he is.  Really he is, I look at him at him all the time and just go "My gosh you are so handsome'!

That is an odd screening question though,  never knew looks had anything to do with it.

A lot of people have been sharing their child's pictures recently, and my reaction has been -- what a cute bunch of kids we have on the spectrum!

This reminded me of when I first started to suspect autism in my son, about 4 years ago, and I came across a strange question on an online screening questionnaire (I don't have the link anymore).  The question was:

Is your child exceptionally beautiful?

I had to say yes, and not just because of my prejudiced opinion as a mother, but because people tell me that.  On Christmas Eve, I had to listen to my sister-in-law's mother rave about my son's looks for probably 5 minutes (she has seen him before, but he was dressed up for Christmas Eve so he looked especially nice).  After the first minute of raving, I was like, okay, I got your point, but at least it's better than hearing someone complain about his challenging behavior for 5 minutes...

Anyhow, has anyone else heard of beauty being a predictor of autism???

I thought I was just biased towards my child but honestly all people I have met on the spectrum have something "angelic" about them..either huge eyes or their soft facial expressions... that they stand out.  I was told since Sarah's birth how beautiful she is.  I see in your children the same beauty I see in Sarah..hard to describe.  They are just angels to me:) I tell my family & friends so much how she's an angel and then I follow with "no seriously!  she really is!" they think I am a nut:P

Blessings,

Shelley

There's apparently some correlation between being autistic and having a number of specific facial characteristics that are generally considered appealing.  (Small chin, wide-set eyes, etc.) People rave about all of my sons and I have to admit they are gorgeous.  I don't know if I get more compliments on Corbin or if it is because of his cuteness that people notice him and then the other two lol.  Ok someone tell me if I am nuts here but just looking at all these beautiful babes do any of you look at the other kids especially through the eyes and think wow that child's eyes are so much like my child's eyes.  I have seen so many that I think wow look they are shaped nearly exactly like Corbin's!  Am I crazy?

the eyes ,yes i have though that and see how they all look alike someway.

here is my boy

Ok So I have to show my guy :) I am told he's cute too, my DD gets most of
the attention from their father's family..but I think Matthew looks like my
side of the family, though there is no ASD on my side...Yes to the eyes thing, quite a few times I have seen other ASD kids and thought wow! Sharlets eyes. I love your theory Fred!!!!!! I tell my DH all the time that if Lucas weren't really cute..... you know. Well he is quite a charmer and all he has to do is look at me and I melt. All of these babies are just precious. And I think mine are as well of coarse, and to tell you the truth this is something me and my mom have been disscussing for some time now that every child I meet that is on the spectrum is absolutley breath taking. It would be an interesting thesis if i could ever get back to school.

The children are definitely beautiful. I get a lot of comments on my son's handsome features all the time.

Is it too late to chime in on the "exceptionally beautiful" thread????    Come on, every mommy needs to boast a little!

Here is John, my 2 1/2 year old with ASD and Molly, his 1 1/2 year old sister, NT.

I love seeing everyones photos!!!!  Here's my sweet little Cami.

I wish I can get Cami to look at the camera long enough to take a picture.  With delays on the digital cameras, she always ends up looking away by the time I take the photo.  It's so hard taking posed photos of her.  She's very impatient.  She has a meltdown when we go to a photo studio, so that's out.  I ended up hiring a photographer to come to my house and follow her around to take candid photos for holiday cards....this was one of them.  They turned out pretty good!  Poor photographer was exhausted after 2 hours of chasing her around

I've heard this quite often as well.  Judge for yourself! When I first started becoming interested in Autism, back in the days of
big hair and big shoulder pads--I remember reading about this. I have
always wondered about this myth. At first, I thought people were just
comparing autistic children to other childhood disorders that have
distinctly different facial features about them. There are many kids with
special needs whose disabilities are readily apparent upon meeting them.
At the time, autism was less of a puzzle, and more of a mystery and there
was always a touch of angelicness attributed to these "dreamy" and
"other-worldly" kids. I don't know where it comes from.. I think gtto's
post is interesting, I had never heard about this.

I can however agree wholeheartedly that we seem to have a whole lot of
adorable children between us!

Jasper is pretty handsome, but I always just thought he was one of those
lucky few who took all the best features from his wildly diverse gene pool.
(I am mixed race Irish/Black/Native American, and his Dad is from
lithuanian and german stock) He does have that small chin/heart-shaped
face with with big wide-set eyes thing going... very interesting...I think he's beautiful...

you guys are not being biased I always said to myself when you posted pictures that these kids on this board are some of the most adorable kids I ever saw and would love to meet them all.  its funny, every time I get a new case I always talk to my family about how adorable the child is and it happens that every time they are on the spectrum so I guess it could have something to do with it.  I think Sharlet is extra beautifull

Don't know if I'm just bias??
I love her eyes!!!I think they are ALL beautiful!!!Parkers mom39115.3807638889They are all adorable!  I love to see everybody's pictures.Last semester I took a class on Special education. Our professor gave us a list of 10 characteristics of Autism and being extremely attractive was one of them. From an evolutionary standpoint, I find this to be an incredibly interesting
topic...
the article was interesting. The funny thing is though that many kids I have seen like in advertisements (autism speaks, cure autism now, the article itself) and they all remind me of my middle one with autism - Fabian

I have heard that too, especially about Fabian

KPdearest439111.8017939815That is one of the myths/truths about autism.  Exceptional attractiveness.  Hey, I'll take it.  My son IS pretty gorgeous and always has been.  Of course, I'd trade his looks for a bit more normalcy... What it is, is partly that there are distinctly different facial features about some forms of autism.  They're just not as readily categorized as the ones in which the facial features in question are considered less attractive in the dominant culture (this is a bias in the medical profession).  They've found low-set or specifically-shaped ears, small chin, wide-set eyes (that may be slightly tilted? I don't remember), etc., as I recall, all of which are neutral or "attractive", so less likely for doctors to go "Something's different here".  There was a Scientific American article about it.

It's also partly that our frequent lack of facial expression (or lack of constant facial animation even if we do have expressions from time to time) is seen as serene (whether it is or not).

i am incredibly inept at computer stuff.....how do you insert pics on this page???

Tricia

My two boys, both of whom are probably on the spectrum (waiting on dx's for both).  Of course, I think they are both GORGEOUS!!

Allen 15 and Adam, this pic is a year old but it's all I had of Allen in photobucket as our pc crashed recently and we lost bunches of pics:

Adam at Christmas:

Julie, your oldest looks so much older than 15.  I hope that things have been getting better for your family.

I have always commented on how adorable the kids are on this board.  Although I have never heard this theory, thinking back on it and about the kids I serve now, they are some of the most beautiful children I've ever encounter.

Tricia,

I did a "search" on this board and found a someone that went to photobucket.com  which was easy enough,,,then you log in and give a password..easy enough..then you upload pic and then copy & paste to the url box..then you copy and paste the numbers to your signature on profile from the url box.. I could be wrong on this..I poke around until it showed up. Good luck:)

Oh My!  I'm looking at these pictures - and you know - All these kids DO kind of look alike!  They are all beautiful, of course...  But every single one looks like they could be a sibling to my Bug!

Interesting...
I am frequently told what a beautiful child Andrew is...I've had other parents of children with autism comment on an association between autism and how incredibly good looking our children are!  I think Gtto's comment is very interesting!

Here is a picture of my little sweetie everyone always comments on how pretty she is. I only had a picture of the whole family.

panickedmomof239106.5182407407moderngnome - you are so right! They have that heart shaped face with the big angel/ doe eyes and the slightly sloped tops of the ears another pic of liam--
editing to add that liam looks quite a lot like me and my dad. Simon looks a bit more like Mark and his side of the family. Mark has sensory issues with food. My brother is ADD (although very high IQ and doing very well as an adult-- never medicated). Those are probably th only 2 instances of anything unusual in our family (other than mark does have an uncle that is paranoid schitzophrenic). Mark also has an incredibly high IQ (both he and my brother are above genius level--- i am only around 140)

I love this

I have noticed that a lot of the children have some of the same traits.  Very cute

Here are some more pics of Collin.  Of course I am his mom, but I think he is one handsome lil man

Lil man with his bop bop (blankie) the other day

Collin at the Zoo 6 months ago

This is him about 10 months ago :) Right when he was diagnosed

And people always walk up to me and say ds is too beautiful for a boy... LOL.

Now seeing all the pictures of all kids here, I am starting to believe its true.

Yep, something is up with the good looks.  Connor modeled in a Gymboree catalogue when he was 18 months.  I took him to a cattle call of 700 kids, and he was one of 25 that were chosen to model for the catalogue.  One of these days I'll have to scan in the page that he was on!

All my kids are lookers.  I need to get more recent photos, though :(

My aunt always says how beautiful Nicky is. She carries on about it. But not the others in our family. She jokes and says he's going to be a model as long as he's taller than his daddy lol I'm 5' 8" that’s average

I think all of your children are gorgous and adorable.. They all have wonderful smiles.. Here are is apicture of my littl eguys.. I just took this for there valentines day card for the family..  Certain facial characteristics that are common in autism are considered very attractive. My son is overweight now (due to all the wrong meds he took), but he was a gorgeous little boy--very finely chisled features and gorgeous dark eyes. I call it the "autistic look." I've read about this as well.

I know I've already shared a pic of Nate but here's one from Christmas with one of his favorite gifts (can't see it but it's a racetrack).  You can see the arm flapping for when he gets really excited! :)

ormomoftwo, Collin is amazingly cute!

And Chasesmom, Chase is such a beautiful child and I love his name.

If I'd had a boy it would have been one of the possibilities, along with Alex and Laine...

All the kids on here I have seen are total cuties.

I am gonna try this...Here is my little guy

Yeah..I did it. I think he's kinda cute myself
