Multipe diagnosises | Autism PDD

My ds was diagnosed with not only PDD-NOS but ADHD and some misc stuff.  I think that when you buy three issues, you get the fourth free with this doc ;)

I am having trouble sorting out which are impulse behaviours vs not understanding.   Such as running into the street.  I do not know if he can not comprehend the danger, or if it is an impulse he can't control.  There are other examples such as "hot" and listening if I say stop.

Is anyone else in the sinking boat???  Any suggestions would be great :)

Impulsiveness and safety issues are quite common with the pdd-nos diagnosis.  And it is not unusual to have multiple diagnosis's.  Unfortunately you will have to do repetitive training.  Mine still have safety issues.  And Gabe is still impulsive.  Good luck.

hey panthosette, tammy's right not uncommon for multiple dx's. my carlo has dx's of seizure disorder,adhd,pdd-nos and cp w/diplegia. i have the same issuses as far as saftey goes. he'll run out in the street, not move if he sees a car coming. not sure if he fully understand what no means all the time. i just try and keep telling him what he needs to do. take care.mom2carlo

Jeffrey is 13 and I still have to constantly remind him to keep his head up and look for cars while we are out in public.

I'm so glad I'm not alone.

How do you approach the problem??  There are different parenting techniques when it is for ADHD vs PDD.  I'm not sure I'm doing the right "mom" thing to help support him because I can't figure out the root cause.

The adhd and autism or pdd-nos is intertwined.  Basically you have to treat both at the same time.  I know Jeffrey has autism along with the adhd, and add.  So I try to not get him oversitmulated.  And repetition on safety issues is a constant.  What I did was constant reminders.  And I did use a leash with both of mine.  Because darting out in front of a city bus is no fun.
