I went to a workshop at Nicky’s school on Wednesday night. It was about dealing with behavior problems for special ed children. They showed a video that was awesome. It had a speaker Richard Lavoie. http://www.ricklavoie.com/videos.html. The video was called when the chips are down. It was geared towards teachers but had lots for parents. Some of the things covered. Never yell at a special needs child; never punish something that is not connected with the behavior problem (like you wrote on the wall so no base ball today.) Punishments should be immediately if possible and exact. Because you wrote on the wall you now have to clean 2 or three walls. Things like this. He explained about how a Childs life is like having poker chips (self esteem). Johnny Jock gets 10000 chips for being a great jock and 20000 chips for going to the prom with the queen. Our children are often afraid to answer question or try new things because they often have very few chips, Johnny will take risks bc he has lots of chips. It is our job to give our children chips. Find what they are good at. If he is good with a screwdriver. Moms loosen all the screws you can and when he comes home tell him. You know no one can use a screwdriver like you, can you please help and tighten these up for me. I thought he was awesome.

I also started to talk with a mom who has a daughter in Nick’s class, I never met her before. She asked were in town I lived. Then she said she use to have a friend who lived on that street, and if I knew them. I said yes I bought my house from them. Small world

Anyway I left the web site hope you all enjoy.

John

FAT CITY is a classic and well worth watching, too.  Our SEPTO showed it every year for years.Richard Lavoie is an interesting fellow. I have really enjoyed watching his videos.
