What to do??? | Autism PDD

Share

My godson is four years old and autistic.  Over the past month he has stopped talking.  My best friend is going insane with this sudden change and then this morning he stopped walking.  What do you do?  How do you handle this?  None of the therapists are suggesting anything that works, but are insisting that she ignore him and that might get him out of this change.

What have you experienced?  What works?  She is using sign language and he is communicating that way but... I don't know.  I feel so helpless and I know what I'm feeling is just a fraction of what she is going through.

Any advice on what I can do to help would be greatly appreciated.  Thank you.

i would have her call his dr. it could be something more that difficult behavior. she should have a battery of tests done to ensure that this is not a separate issue, when all tests are done and come back fine then i would concentrate on a behavioral plan. I wanted to say that you are a very good friend to not only her but to your God son aswell.

Hi Auntiek Welcome to the board. I agree with shakes.... I would suggest going back to the neurologist or developmental pediatrician and having other tests run to make sure there isnt anything going on medically as kids with autism can and oftern DO have other diagnosis' that go along with the autism.

This could be regression as well.... Have their been any changes (even minor ones) that could have upset him?

Bless you for being there to help her through this and offer your care and support! Hang in there and please keep us updated on how hes doing! I hope everythign turns out to be ok! Sometimes these kids STOP doing previously aquired skills to gain a new skill..... although this sounds pretty serious. Is there anyhting he REALLY loves to do that you could encourage him with??

Thank you first off for responding.  I didn't know if I was just sending this out to the universe.   It's comforting to read that there are others like my godson out there and that we aren't alone.

My godson has had a full gamut of testing done twice, one was due to seizers that he was having but they were so short my friend couldn't catch them on tape.  The dr put him in a room for a weekend attached to tons of little wires that monitored his brain activity.  My poor friend had to try and entertain him for 16 hours before anything happened.  Currently he is taking meds for that.

As for change, a little over a month ago her husband started working outside the home.  She is currently trying to find a job that will let her have more freedom so she can spend more time with him.  Of course she really just wants to be a stay at home and be with him.

I forgot to mention, he has been OBSESSED with the alphabet for over a year.  Its amazing to watch him organize his letters and god help you if you move or touch one of them.
