I mentioned in another post about being able to create a new autism program at my school and agency. I am both parent and teacher and know what I would like to see in an effective program. What would people here see as the "ideal" in a good program. Two things I want to emphasize would be access to me as the consultant, and parent accountablility. Very frustrating as I have a few students in our program who have districts paying well over 0,000 to be in our program and have outside consultants and they are as invested in their child's program as if we were simply a drop off daycare....not fair to that child or to other kids. So what would you put in a program if you could ?I would incorporate regular parent training sessions as well as home visits. Especially to teach how to incorporate the things that are successful in school at home. Also give parents the opportunity to learn about proven techniques that work with autistic kids like ABA, visual pictures schedules, PECS...things that can be adjusted to be used in the home. I'd also provide a weekly parent support group. If at all possible, I'd also incorporate speakers in the support group format. This is SO exciting that you are starting this.
