Hooray signing worked | Autism PDD

I read on here the other day about several of you having great success with teaching sign language to your child. Somebody posted the free link to videos of sign language words.

I started using them with Levi. He is now using "eat," but I am still not sure if he understands it or just finds it amusing and mimics me.

But check this out: I have been trying to teach Levi facial parts for months. I touch his eye and say "Levi's eye." I touch my eye and say, "mommy's eye." He just pacifies me but never says a word. Well, I signed and said "I love you" to Levi yesterday. He got upset with me. I did it again and soon as I got to the pronoun "I," Levi immediately pushed down my hand and touched my eye and said "eye." Hooray Levi, you have understood mommy even though you never acknowledged it!

That felt so good to see that he can say a word and understands what it is! What a little rascal, I wonder what else he is keeping from me???

Such a sweet story. I always wonder what my little ones are thinking too. I got a chuckle out of the pushing your hands down. I taught Takoda a few signs at the suggestion of the ST. I remember offering him water when he had observed Mommy was hiding a soda can. He picked up on the water sign and was very mad. He shoved my hands also.

I never took it very far because he always got mad. But you should definatly stick with it.

Keep up the good work!  It's always wonderful when they surprise us with something we didn't know they understood, isn't it?
