Keep eating....question | Autism PDD

Hello all,

Just wanted to ask y'all if you're constantly having to tell your child/children (autistic or not) while they're eating...to KEEP eating?? I don't remember EVER having to tell my Daughter to keep eating while she was eating breakfast/lunch/dinner...I'm ALWAYS having to tell Tony "Keep eating Tony"........Just wondered if that was an "autistic trait" or if any of YOU experience that with children who AREN'T autistic.

Luke takes a long time to eat as well.  I thought I HAVE heard of some autistic kids needing reminders to 'keep eating' however.  Like they forget what they're doing in the middle of it.

Linda,

Yes all the time with Takoda! His favorite thing is to slowly eat a couple bites and then say, "I'm Done". I have to tell him your not done and not allow him down from the table. He is so underweight.

My others are not! They eat me out of house and home just like you would expect boys to do.

PS. He also has the habit of chewing and spitting.

Since both have extremely high metabolisms (and hence hyperactivity) they usually eat about ever 45 -60 minutes throughout most of the day (I can't keep anything in the house.. pretzals, bananas, animal crackers, crackers gone almost the minute they hit the door).  I also know lots of people with non autistic kids that have issues with eating food (my 11 year old cousin has to be watched to make sure she eats or else she will just pick and wander off)

Totally... everything is more interesting than eating.  He will take a bite or two then be off to something else whether it is playing with his hair or hiding under the chair.

After he tries his best, I will feed him.  He is too underwieght to fight this battle.  I bribe him as well with tofu based desserts.  I get gummy bear vitamins.

Short of trying to stick something in his mouth all the time, I don't have any ideas.
