Does anyone know of resources for a single mom of an autistic child who is about to have surgery? She will need post op care for herself and care for her child while she is in the hospital and during her recovery.
Yes, there are respite services avaiable to ASD children. There are many differnet places and people that will help. It depends on your insurance, location, etc. If I can be of any help LA just PM me.

Thank you, Venus. It is good to know there are resources out there. I know nothing about assistance available to families with an autistic child and appreciate your help. I will have more info on this lady later this week. She is in the New Orleans, LA area. (I have to say this): GO SAINTS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!H Venus,
The patient is living in the New Orleans, LA area, Jefferson Parish. Her son is 9 years old with a functionality of about 18 mos. He is entitled to children's respite services through a waiver program (I think) and school aftercare. To complicate matters further, they have a 2 1/2 year old Italian Grayhound/Catahoula mix dog. Her son will need care during her hospitalization (usually approx 5 days) and after she is discharged from the hospital. She describes her son as "requiring a LOT of patience" and has expressed displeasure with the respite services she has used in the past.
This is not my area of expertise. I work with adults only, but am involved because I assist with discharge planning. Any guidance you can give me will be appreciated.
PS The mom has Medicare as insurance.I really can't help you, but BRAVO for so diligently seeking out help and information for this woman. !

It sounds like she will need in home respite services. If you have trouble finding someone here's an idea, Check the local colleges for kids who are studying early childhood development, child psychology and other medical area's of interest. My daughter who is a psych major would love the opportunity to help and she has studied(as well as having a brother with autism) ASD. She of course is in California so that won't help you but the college kids may be more of a resource than you would expect. And most can afford to take a temporary position such as that. Community service for them too.
One question, is there no family to help? I wish I could be of assistance but again we are in California.
