Yesterday I took Jakob for his first "real" haircut. The girl that cut his hair was SO wonderful with him. I think it actually went better than my NT older son's first haircut! I still can't believe she actually managed to have him sit in that chair for 45 MINUTES! She was so patient and gentle with him. At first, I thought, this is never gonna work, because she was just taking her time and playing with him and combing his hair the first 10 minutes. I thought he'd only sit in the chair for 15 minutes tops. Each time she started combing he would try and grab her comb and she would just hand it to him and grab another. He wiggled all over and she just moved right with him and continued cutting, the whole time reassuring me it was fine if he moves, as long as he doesn't cry, because that would break her heart. She even used the clippers on him, and while he didn't really like it too much..he allowed it! Just wanted to share our great experience with ya'll. Calling around to find the right person really made a big difference in my case. I could tell right away on the phone she was eager to help me, and didn't hesitate at all when I told her he was a 23 month old with classic autism. BTW, he even said his name and comb while looking in the mirror!
Wow, that is so great!!!! Great way to end my evening,
Tammy
