That is very interesting. My son is terribly pigeon toed. We never really noticed it when he first started walking but it started getting worse. His PT said that this was due to the "W" sit. Now that we have started correcting his sit position -- the severity is MUCH less.
When we had her first ECI appt. they asked does she always w sit. I was like what? Then I thought yes wow it does look like a w! I felt so dumbMy son w-sits, too, but the PT who saw him recently said that he's not
doing it 'too badly' ... he's almost just sitting on his legs (which I
do all the time!). I get a little worried, however, be/c his toes
seem to turn inward now when he walks. :/ So I try to correct it
all the time anyway, which is what his OT suggested.
My DD OT told us it wasn't good for their hips. She told us the reason they do it is because they feel more stable in that position. They seem to have the fear of falling sideways or backwards and feel it gives them a more stable base. I am always saying fix your legs and she does it now usually the 1st time I ask, but she will always sit this way when she sits down. Yep!!! My son is a hard and true "W" sitter. PT and OT say that it is also hard on the knees. They are not as concerned about the "Y" position. They said to let that one go. I figure if you are working on correcting the "W", you might as well work on correcting the "Y". Any thoughts? Funny though, when my son was an infant, he learned to sit unassisted very early and had an unbelievable ability to catch himself backward and side to side --muscle tone was not a problem. I think that it is interesting that at some point me made the transition because he felt the need to stabilize his truck. Funny...I have no idea how ds sits lol. I never pay attention as I never figured it mattered anything. I should know better now, as I'm learning w/ possibly having this disorder, everything matters lol. I do know ds is toe in too. But so am I. Very noticable. I'll have to watch when he sits now. :-) Amber Megan loves to w sit too. I must admit though I am not good at tryign to correct it. Seems just about the time you go to correct it she is on to the next thing. it just seems there is sooo much to work on, this one is one of my lesser issues.. What is a Y sit? I dont get it. Suzanne I know this has been covered on here I'm sure but I guess I missed it. I am just interested in how many of our kids w sit? My DD does all the time.
Leo's last OT said to get him out of the position, and yet his ped said it
was "rather old fashioned" to be concerned about "w" sitting.
I have the book: " The Out-of-Sync Child" (all about Sensory Integration
Dysfunction) and its position on "w" sitting is that when a child is in that
position, although it is supporting their trunk, it is not allowing them to
develop fine and gross motor skills because it is restrictve of turning and
bending, etc.
