Well, we got the developmental ped. Dr report yesterday. Her blood tests came out normal no markers? Then he goes onto say that her receptive language is below a 1 yr old. Her expressive language while seems to be age appropriate he feels it is because of her using echolaic (sp) language. He says all of this might be due to her early living arrangements or prenatally when she was with her birth mother. He ordered a full psycho--- ??? autism workup. That center is booked until late Oct.
Does this sound like the first step in a diagnosis or what? I hate being so confused. And on a lighter note all yesterday she started a new phrase learned from somewhere I haven't figured out yet. If anybody acted like they were leaving she would say "Bye have a nice trip?" I heard it all day and was continually being handed my purse by her.
We had 2 done. The first was near the beginning when we were going through all the medical issues too such as blood tests and brain scans/x-rays to rule out everything. The second I paid for because I did not agree with the first. The 2 we had done were so vastly different! The first said he was a bit behind but not enough to worry about, the second said he was severely developmentally delayed (they were 6 mos apart). My issue with the psychometric was my ds does not appear to be able to access the same info all the time. Like one day he can count to 10 the next he can't! So with the first, it was 2 short sessions on good days. The 2cd assessment fell on a bad day and questions were not termed how my ds needed to hear them. Suzanne: Just want you to know I can relate to your frustration with how long it takes to get your child examined. My son is on a waiting list as the next appointment is OVER ONE YEAR away. That is ridiculous. I called all the other psych places in the Houston area and none of them can handle diagnosing children under age 4. This Meyer Center is the only place. A friend of mine said if the University of Pittsburgh can get Levi in sooner she will get us out there. Grrrrrrrrrrrrrr why don't more places deal with this when it is becoming such an epidemic??? Over and over they claim the sooner they start intervention the better. My insurance will not cover anything until the Meyer Center and Pediatric Neurologist both see Levi. Even the Pediatric neurology appointment is for the end of November. Ugh. Hopefully this will all change sometime soon in the future so the next bunch of parents don't have to go through this WAITING. Susanne,.... Blood tests coming back noraml with no markers is good news.... it means it isnt something genetic like fragile X for example. Autism (SO FAR) has no genetic markers.... the only way to diagnose is through observations. Expressive languae being on target ....even if it is from echolalia but receptive language being delayed sounds to me like he may be looking at a possible aspergers diagnosis.... The possibility of this being due to early living arrangements I might understand if she had been abused.... or prenatally???? Not quite sure I understand that one. It does sound like the doctor is trying to rule out everything else prior to making an official diagnosis I am guessing this is your 2 year old? Generally speaking they dont like to diagnose an ASD until they are closer to age 3 because some kids are just developmentally delayed... learn a little slower but catch up.... Please keep us updated! Thanks so much for helping me sort through all this Dr. talk. Yes, we think aspergers is what we suspect. Her therapists think that also. Yes, that is the name of the test he mentioned. I am so glad you mentioned about one day being able to do something and somedays not. DD is just like that. I was reading just yesterday where some people say autism is like alzheimers? In some respects I agree. Not sure what prenatally means except that she might have been exposed to alcohol. But she doesn't have any physical characteristics of it.
