what is iep and how does it work | Autism PDD

my son is not three he has several months before he gets there. i keep hearing alot about this subject do the children with a dx start pr-k at age three?? i thought it was four mine is not even close to being potty trained??I think it depends on where you live, but I am sure everywhere has Early Childhood Intervention that is where the school does an eval and decides if yr child needs special services. IEP stand for Individual Education Plan this would be created if yr child meets criteria for special services. As far as potty training, at least here if their in a special education setting then they have somebody change yr child.

Your child might even be able to get services at home right now.  And IEP is an Individual Education Plan and, by law, children with disabilities can get them starting at age 3 in EVERY state. This is not like typical preschool.  It is designed to help give your child extra services that will help him catch up with his typical peers to the extent that he can. Services like speech therapy, occupational therapy, physical therapy and ABA are given to kids in preschools that specialize in this.  Even when your child gets to kindergarten age he will have an IEP so that he can get the education he requires.  Being potty trained has NOTHING to do with getting services.  In fact, helping you teach him to use the bathroom can be part of what he learns IN school.

To get the ball rolling, call your local school district NOW to find out how you can get him evaluated for services so everything will be ready for him the minute he turns 3.

Ya my oldest starting to get services at 9 months in our home and my 4 1/2 yr and 2 yr old are doing that nowMy son had gotten early intervention service in my home at age 2 and that lasted until he was three.. When he turned three you have the choice to get him evlauted by the school district if you want to.. If they evalute him and he warrants services through them, then you set up a IEP metting for service.. That is how it is in NEw JErsey.. In the district i am in my son goes 2 1/2 hours a day.. from 9to 11:30 am i kno wthi sis not enough but that is all they offer for a 3 year old.. I am pushing for more time now that i have a dx.. So we will see.. But if  you feel they are problems then call earlyintervention and get him tested..
we have already started early intervention we have a speech therapist and an ot coming this week. if he does qualify for services will he start school to recieve them after ei is over??? does it also mean he will be in pre-school for two year age 3-4 4-5 to catch up???I believe it all has to do with how your child progresses and if they need more pre-school. My oldest had sp ed in home from age 9 mon-2yrs then he had sp ed pre-school for 2 more additional yr the 2 yrs of kin.Don't worry about the potty training. My kid will be four soon and is still
terrified of toilets. They just wrote it into his IEP as one of his goals for the
year: to successfully participate in the toileting routine at school...no biggie.
Good luck.DANIEL DID IT AT 3 AND 1/2.SE PRESCHOOL i LOVE.
