Regional center funds a variety of different services. All services are based upon the child's needs as determined by evaluations and the IFSP/IPP. The "intensity" of the services is driven by the child's needs and the family's preference. Some families prefer intensive therapy and others opt for more naturalistic approaches.
Regional Centers and School Districts fund behavior therapy, speech therapy, occupational therapy, etc... most of the services available in other states. However, the responsible agency (regional center vs. school district) is determined by the type of services (educational in nature or family support).
If you have a preference for a specific agency to work with your child you may encounter a waiting list. Otherwise the wait is usually short or no-wait period.
childpsych could you tell me typically what kind of services regional center provide(Like therapy)and how intensive they are.any info. on that. Also is there any waiting perod is there .thanksAndysmama try contacting this place they should be able to direct you to support groups

The services for children with Autism in California are funded by 2 main sources:
1) (California) State Department of Developmental Services through local "REGIONAL CENTER." Regional centers typically fund services that pertain to the child's needs in the home and community settings. There are many regional centers in California which cover a specific geographic area "catchment area." Your regional center will be assigned based on your residential address. You will have a "service coordinator" (case manager) who assists you to obtain services for your child. All services need to be substansitated in your Indvidualized Person Plan (IPP for children over 3) or Individualized Family Service Plan (IFSP for children under 3).
2) Local School District or Special Education Local Plan Area (SELPA). School distrcits fund services that are deemed "educational" in nature and needed to help the student meet goals/objects in his/her Individualized Education Plan (IEP).
