Starting School | Autism PDD

When my son Nick started schoolin February I was feeling the same way !!! Mostly because he had never even been to daycare! Also because his school is about an hour away from home, I agree with staying in contact with teachers ,aides and bus drivers!!! I would send him with a note everyday that describes what kinds of things he does not like or does really like at first. They will more than likely get to know him as well as you do soon. Nicks school has home/school notes that go back and forth every day and also a phone call atleast once a week. They also have a video system in a every classroom so we can stop in at his school anytime we want and sit in observation rooms and see exactly what is going on in his class room without any notification. It makes you feel at ease to see it for your self considering they can't tell you what is happening!!Just make alot of phone calls and make sure you educate everyone who will be working with him how he is and how to do certain things with him...they always say the mother knows the most about the child. Good luck and believe me you will be so surprised at how easy he will adjust and so happy when you see the results of school!!!

Trevor will be 3 on Sunday and he starts school that Monday in a Special day class through our school district. I am so sad that he is going to be going to school. My concern for him is that if some other kid or kids doing something or hurt him that he won't be able to tell me what happened. I am so scared to send him to school but I know that he needs to get the help for his Autism. Has anyone been in this situation and if so can you please help.I can definitely relate! My son Gavin is 3 as we and he started school
in February. I was so nervous! I was mostly worried he would get lost
and not be able to tell anyone who he was and where he needed to
go......so I labeled everything on him with his name and address (lol).
I think the most important thing is to have a good relationship with
his teachers, therapists, and even bus driver (if he takes the bus). I
keep in constant contact with all of them through a notebook and
emails. I even have the home phone numbers of his bus drivers just
in case. It is rough having him come home from school everyday and
not be able to tell me anything that happened, but I trust the school
and the teachers. They also send home a weekly newsletter about
what they did in class that week and have parent teacher
conferences every couple of months.

All the worry has definitely been worth it though. Since starting
school Gavin has made so much progress....much more than with
therapy alone. He started the school year pronouncing all his words
with vowels only. Now he pronounces about 60% of his words
correctly and can say full sentences. The last couple of weeks he
started to use my name and I can't tell you how good it feels to hear
him say "What are you doing Mom?" or "How are you Mom?". I have
waited a long time to hear him say something like that.
Good Luck! I'm sure he will do great!
