"Win the war, not just a battle" | Autism PDD

I think you've got a very healthy outlook on this issue. Very wise words. I really hope when the time comes for me to deal with the education system I can follow this advice and not let MY emotional problems get in the way of getting the best results for Jakob. It's still about 2 years away before I'll probably really have to deal with schools and I'm already worrying myself sick about it. So many of these mothers on this board have such a hard time with the school systems, and I have such deep sympathy for them, I just hope and pray that when the time comes, we get lucky and only have to deal with supportive and helpful people! But if not, I'm going to try my hardest to use your advice. Hi Luanne What wonderful words of asvice to try to follow. Thank You!

Dear Friends,

I am new to the board, but must tell you how much I enjoy and have learned from so many of you.  My son is 11 and was diagnosed with autism at 2 1/2.  I have been through the gambit of all kinds of educational, social, etc. situations in the past 8 years.

However, one thing always rings clear to me and I try to remind myself of it every day - While I must be my child's advocate- IT IS NOT ABOUT ME - IT IS ABOUT HIM!  Know it sounds simple, but when I keep that in sight I find that I go into meetings, situations, etc. with the knowledge that I want what is best for my child.  That may mean not getting everything I want (i.e. winning the battle) but working with and trying to achieve a goal to win the war.  What's the war?  It is making sure my child gets every chance to reach "his" potential without it being detrimental to someone else's child or teacher.

When I go into battles with a realistic, team approach I find that sometimes there is no limit to what some people will do to rise to the occasion.  My motto (besides Winning the War) is to embrace and educate not alienate.  Many people (just like most of us before autism became a part of our lives) just don't understand and need our help to impower them to help our children.

Just food for thought.  Again thanks for all your wonderful insight.

Luanne
