My little Jared | Autism PDD

Jared's Dad,

I have a son Jared too. My son is ten now but before he was born his schoolteacher Grandfather begged me not to name him Jared. He said Jareds and Jasons are always class clowns or chronic troublemakers.

I didn't listen. My son has a record of being removed from daycares and suspended from school. He is Dx ODD. I don't have many problems with him at home but everywere else he challenges authority figures and the rules.

I am currently trying to get him tested to see if there is more going on. His little brother is HFA. I want Jared tested for PDD spectrum disorders and possible mental illness issues.

I hope you find answers for your son while he's young.

Welcome to the board!

Hi Jared's dad...

Welcome to the board!  I'm so sorry to hear about the daycare situation and I agree...this world can be cruel...but we are here for our kids and they will have more chances thankfully because of early intervention etc...I have to have hope right?! ; )  Plus they are all just soooo loved and cherished too! lol

I wanted to just say my guy Nicholas, who is now almost 4 1/2 and dx w/ pdd/nos at 29 mths, wasn't a fan of me showing him books either...he liked the flip up books w/ real pictures and letters or numbers (his favorite at the time) he learned mostly from Sesame Street and Blue's Clues Video's sad to say...I use to watch them with him and would and still do interact...he learned his alphabet and numbers and shapes and is starting to know his colors now...also baby Einstien videos were great...my guy is musically motivated, he loves to dance and ANDsing and listen or play music, and he liked the video's because of the action and music...the bumble bee's though great, were a little slow for him...he does now watch an occasional one and as he's becoming more verbal will look at me proudly when he repeats what they are saying...and of course we make a huge deal out of it LOL...because it is!

He now likes books and one thing I love that we bought him was the playschool touch and play I think its called, like a leapfrog w/ touching instead of the pen...it came w/ a sesame street book and he really loved it....

Give the tapes a try he may love them, but don't despair if he doesn't he may like them later down the line...best of luck to you and my best advice if he's into video's is just watch them w/ him...see which songs or skits he really gets a kick out of and interact or sing those songs during the day when the video is not on...it will capture his attention and may entice him into more interactions...

best of luck to you and your guy!

hugs!

Ali

Hi Jared's Dad

We are also looking for a new preschool for our son (ppd-nos 4 1/2 yrs).  Yes the world can be rotten.  I get so angry that I am told to make educational decisions based on how some snotty eight yr old might treat my son.  Yes, the plastic bubble looks more and more attractive lol.

When looking for a new day care, get some simple info on autism to share.  I think people are more open if you are up front with what is happening.

I have a mentally retarded brother as well.  I am discovering coping skills I didn't know I had, you will too.

Good luck

Hi Jared's Dad,Welcome to the board. Sorry to hear about your trouble with day-care, my guy was about 16 mos old when they asked him to leave. OUCH!!! anyways, he's made great progress and is doing well. I just wanted to say welcome

My wife and I are in the process of trying to get our son diagnosed.  There is a long waiting period here, which can be upwards of six months, but as I'm sure with all of you 24 hours is too long to wait to find out.

Today we were given the bad news that we have seven days to find our son a new day-care because he doesn't listen to the teachers or conform to their rules or structure.  Again, same old story for everyone here.

As an explanation for my first two posts, I grew up with a mentally-retarded brother and I know that this world can be rotten. I feel for my son my wife and I love him no matter what, and am looking to help him in anyway I can.

We can't get Jared to sit and read a "First words" book, but he loves videos, so I'm hoping that someone here has tried the vides from Baby Bumblebee and can give me some insight.  The testimonials seem too good to be true.
