new medication - terrible meltdowns???? | Autism PDD

Share

I am new to this whole message board thing, but running out of ways to get information.  My daughter got put on Risperdal last week and had 2-3 meltdowns (2 hrs each) for the first 2 days.  She just cries and screams very loudly and doesn't want anyone to touch her.  She seemed to be better the last 3 days, but now she has been back at school for 2 days and they want me to come and get her each time she has a meltdown.  I told them I can't keep her home the rest of school year and that I think she is doing it somewhat to be able to come home.  The doctor says that this is normal and it will take a few weeks for the medicine to adjust.    Anyone have advice about what the school says or on the new medicine?  I am the step-mom and have only had Chelsea for 6 months now (she moved from CA) and every time I think that things are going in a positive direction I find myself dealing with another new issue.  Thank you for any advice you can give me

hey stacyrose6, first of all welcome to the board, and btw you can get a lot of info here.as far as meds go my ds was just taken off risperdal, but the doc is right it does take a bit to fully get into there system. if it's really hard to deal with contact the doc and see if there is any other opotions being meds or therapy.

the school she's in is it a special ed setting? if so they should be able to deal with the meltdowns that's why it's call special ed. if not have you tried to place her in special ed, i know school is almost out, but what about next year? hope this helps. let me know if i can help in any way. take care. btw i'm mom 2 3 kids. erica 12, carlo5 pdd-nos and ryleigh 20 mths.talk to ya soon.mom2carlo

Hi Stacy.....

We had the very same problem with Curtis when they tried him on Adderal XR....he was an emotional basket case......horrible meltdowns......emotional outburst .....and very, very sensitive......I called the psychatrist who had prescribed this med for him and she took him off of it and said that red flagged Curtis for all stimulints....he can't take any of them.......you may want to check with the dr.....if you haven't already......that was our experience with it.....Curtis does not currently take any meds ...and has learned to help himself with his frustrations that cause his meltdowns through behaviour therapy.....it was the best we could do as he couldn't take any of the meds.....Good luck....she may be having a reaction to the med......there could possibly be some other med available for her.....

oh and I forgot to mention....I am also step mom to Curtis....he has lived with us for almost 4  years.......it was hard at first but now it is just "old hat"......you will get the hang of things........and everyday is an experience.....Good luck.....and Welcome..... i also live in Va in King and Queen county........As a step mom I run into difficulties just because of the title.....but things have improved with time....the drs now accept that i know what is going on with him as i offer the bulk of his care.....Good luck and feel free to pm me anytime......i will be glad to offer anything i can....Terribrowneyes38504.4022337963
