what are the autism milestones? | Autism PDD

Agreed with what everyone above said.   Not sure if you'll find that helpful, but take comfort in the fact that at least now you have a diagnosis ... a 'reason' for your child being delayed ... and hopefully you can get the tools in place to help him begin his journey towards progressing thru the milestones you mentioned.  Speech and occupational therapies are very important, but don't underrate your own importance in his life.  Try to learn how to communicate with him and that should open up more doors to help him to learn.

Good luck and welcome to the board!

Hi Jedi Welcome! I know we all wish there were answers... and a manual! Something to offer us hope..... peace of mind ......something to look forward to... When exactly will our child be able to talk? When will they sleep? When will they potty train? I wish we had answers! The truth is there is no known answers and no guarantees. Most kids make pretty good progress, but unfortunately some don't. AS has already been mantioned each child is different and what some can do others can not. I can tell you many kids dont potty train until they are older..... you have to think of their developmental age rather than their chronological age.  Its hard and there are no guarantees... but you just keep trying!

I hope you like it here on the board.. everyone is really supportive

Hi!  My name is Crystal and my 5th child ended up diagnosed as autistic at age 3 after two years of trying to figure out why little andrew is behind others his age and why he isnt talking or looking us in the eyes. he is 5 now and I am wondering..... is there some kind of time line as to how autistic children mark milestones. at what age do they start talking ?  when are they able to learn their abc's?  I am so happy to find this message board- I didnt knw that parents of autistic children had any avenue of sharing at all. this is great!

can anyone tell me when thier autistic child started doing things like using the potty alone, speaking, playing with toys , dressing himself ,  turning on a light,...etc to kind of give us "newbies" a little hope?

I'm new here too, but I think it's safe to say that autism is such a
broad spectrum that you can't generalize the milestones. I think that
is why it is impossible to find stats like that (I've tried too). That is
one of my biggest frustrastions with the disorder. I feel like I have no
way of knowing what tomorrow will bring. My son sees a
developmental pediatrician once every 6 months and even she won't
venture out and give me milestones to look for. I find that his
development ebbs and flows. For instance right now he is doing
really well in his speech, making huge improvements everyday, but
his behavior is the worst it has ever been. Hi Crystal, Welcome to the board. I too feel that autism has such a broad spectrum that there is no definitive answer to that question. Each child is uniquely different and therefore what comes easily to one my infact be a hurdle never completed by another. you will find here tools and suggestions to make the most out of life with a child who suffers from an ASD. Its aplace where you can share you good and bad days, people will to lend an ear, shoulder and a peice of their heart. Welcome again

What works for one child, won'twork on another.  Each child achieves their milestones differently.  You have to also keep in mind  the developmental age of the child and not just their actual age.

I agree here with these ladies about every child is different.  I just wanted to say WELCOME!!!!  I'm Karrie I have a 3 year old with Pdd-Nos.  Hope you find this group as supportive as I have!!  Take care,

Karrie

What Michelle said is so true. Jonah will be five in a few weeks, yet is at a 2 1/2 old level, and JUST got potty trained. So I guess In that respect he is AHEAD of most "normal" kids!   Still working on staying dry all night though, with BOTH boys!
