Welcome Gavin's Mom! My son is 9 3/4 and I too remember the loud and / or high pitched voices and did as shakes suggested by reminding him to use his indoor voice or big guy voice. We also worked on voice pitches... when he spoke high pitched I would use an extremely low tone then I would suggest we try together in a regualr voice.  welcome gavin'smom, hope you'll like it here. im mom2carlo who's 5 and pdd-nos. take care mom2carlo

Ok, my son's so young (just turned 2 as most of you know) that I don't understand some of these things. Since he only babbles for the most part, I never think anything of his voice tone or volume. I figure...aren't all little 2 yr old boys supposed to be loud and silly? Sometimes when he's talking to me in his babble (he will come up and babble like he's telling me something important sometimes even though I have no idea what he's saying lol) he will go high pitched. I don't know if there's anything wrong w/ that. I guess if this is something of importance it will be noticable more once he does develop more language, which I'm thinking may be soon w/ the ST. There are many questions on the inet tests I have a hard time answering because of his age and lack of language. Many of them, like this one of pitch/volume I just put don't know. This is all so much fun! not!

Gavin's loud noises are different than a typical 3 1/2 yr old, mostly
because of the kinds of sounds he is making. When he was just 2
like yours, this was not something we worried about. Most 2 yr olds
are loud and make high pitched sounds. But, most of my friends who
have kids Gavin's age can tell their kids to be quiet and they will
comply (even if it is only for a short time). Gavin just seems like he
can't stop himself even though he understands what being quiet
means. By the way, I think it is great that you found this board so
early in the game. When I was in your shoes I don't think I would
have been brave enough to do something like this. More power to
you! This is my first time even using a message board! I am so excited to
see I am not the only one dealing with these things. My son Gavin is
3 1/2 and was diagnosed with autism about 6 months ago. I have
been looking into support groups in my area, but haven't found any
that meet when I could attend. This seems like a great alternative!

Anyone with advice on teaching my son to control the volume of his
voice? He is constantly doing what I now know is verbal stimming
(humming and repeating things over and over). It gets so loud
sometimes that I can't hear myself think. He knows what it means to
be quiet, but seems like he can't control himself. Anybody else
dealing with this?

my son has verbal stims too.  He makes this sound like " ticka ticka ticka"  at first I thought he was immitating a train but then later realized like you have stated that it is a verbal stim.  My son will also scream NO really loud when he doesn't what you to talk to him.  NO this and NO that....whatever we are talking to him about at the time. LOL  I have no idea what to do either.  Hopefully someone else will have some good advice on this one.  By the way...Welcome to the board!!  I have a 3 year old son with Pdd-Nos.  He is almost 3 1/2 so our kids are close in age.  Take care,

Karrie

Good to know I'm not the only one. When I'm out in public and he is
quoting Toy Story at the top of his lungs people look at us like we
are both crazy!

Hi Gavin's Mom,

Welcome to the board. We're now working on our "inside" voice with my son,4 with pdd-nos so i know what you mean when saying , " I can't hear myself think" With stimming it's hard because if you decrease one stim, they'll replace it with another. I try to redirect my son when he's making weird noises with his mouth, his new hobby ( think part raspberry part duck noise) he stims when not engaged so as soon as he starts, i offer other activities, reading a book, play-doh, color ect. the more vigorous exercise, the less he stims.
