Anyone ever moved away from a district? | Autism PDD

Share

I am really considering it.  We have had nothing but complications from our district and are in the middle of mediation/due process with our current district for our three year old.

Now with our one year old twins one has pdd and the other speech and dev delays I dont think i can deal with them again in two years.

I know no district is perfect but others have to be better then what we are dealing with now!

Curious to see if anyone out there really moves to get away from their district to another.

by the way we are in southern NJ

Not sure what you mean  by School of Choice.  They have an in district self contained classroom and two preschool disabled classrooms.

We are out of district now because the child study team didnt want to work on life skills or deal with his gag reflex for textures.  They are now threatening to pull him out of his school and put him in one of their classrooms.

We are also considering moving and putting our house on the market after we move.  I need to start researching the different districts around here.  So far the best is just south of us but my husband works an hour north of us now,  i cant imagine moving south.

Funny our advocate from SPAN told me she knows alot of parents that move  for this reason.  It really is a shame.

Thanks for the advice.

We moved our children out of district through school of choice.  We are trying to sell our house and move in district but I didn't want to wait and I'm glad we didn't.  The school district that we choose to send our kids to has been wonderful for my older son.  This is the first year for my younger son who has pdd-nos.  Although it is not perfect and we're experiencing some bumps, its still better than the roadblocks I faced in the other district.

I don't know if your state offers school of choice, but if they do its offers you more freedom.  I keep asking, as I am new to the world of IEPs and such, "why does this have to be so difficult?"  I'm an educator and I just don't "get it."  I'm also an "out of the box" thinker which is what our kids need but hard to find.

I sincerely wish you the best.

It is ashame.  My house is on the market too because I want out of the area we live due to schools in general.  We've only lived here 3years and I'm going nuts!  We moved from TX and boy do I miss my old district!  Anyway,  school of choice is set up by individual states - some offer it some don't.  If you are not happy with your school district you can go to another district of your choosing - in my case its a totally different ISD and county.  During the open enrollment period you fill out a form and it is sent to your current district requesting they release your child to your school (district) of choice.  Some districts get very territorrial over this because the funding $$ follow the child.  And...as I have recently learned the releasing district must enter into an agreement to reimburse the accepting district for any special ed services.  It really is just a matter of paperwork - and shouldn't be that difficult - yeah, right!  Anyway, it is working for us right now, right today, right as I type but tomorrow...well its anyone's guess.
