Inability to Self Regulate Behavior | Autism PDD

I just need to talk about the pain. Unlike someone else who posted, I
have not found a lot of emotional support, which is why I joined this
forum. The dx is new, but there have been others before it. My 10 y/o
son has had problems since preschool, but he's now 10. His dx is PDD
NOS now. He can't self regulate, and we just switched psychiatrists. We
are going through med changes methodically without cross tapers (not
decreasing one while increasing another). He tests with average
intelligence with a big split between verbal and nonverbal IQs -- the
nonverbal is borderline. He is 2.5 to 3 or 4 years behind academically,
depending on the area.

The most difficult part is the out of control behavior, wondering if it's
going to get worse and what it will mean for the lives of all of my family
members. Have any of you dealt with this successfully without having to
resort to a residential setting? We're starting with new behavior
therapists for help at home, and there's already help at school. We're not
in family therapy for this at this time. My sons behavior has been bad in the past, but not to the extent of some of the people on the board.  There are several people going through this right now.  My son is on Abilify to control anger outbursts.  It has been very successfull.  I am sure that others can offer opinions. Tanner, You are not alone, my son is 11 with Aspergers and his behavior has been our biggest battle. You are doing the right think by getting help, we are in the process of trying to find a therapist for son, so we can get a behavior program at home. Good Luck I feel your pain.
