WELCOME TO THE BOARD LINDA!!!

HI Linda Welcome to the boards! Everyone here is friendly, caring, UNDERSTANDING and helpful  I hope you feel comfortable and like it here as much as we do!

My son is 9 3/4 now and diagnosed PDD-NOS... my girls are (almost 17 and 7.

Im sorry to hear of the waits you are encountering in getting help for Leo... hang in there and keep fighting!

PDD is Pervasive Developmental Disorder, ASD is Autism Spectrum Disorder.... either way is a way to describe the broad spectrum or category  of the 5 different disorders under the umberella...  Asutism, Aspergers, PDD-NOD (Pervasive Developmental Disorder - Not Otherwise Specified), Retts and Childhood Disintegrative Disorder (CDD)  Heres a link to a recent discussion we all had on this maybe it will help......  Help me to understand this...

Hi Linda, just wanted to say welcome to the board. hope to hear from you soon!Hi Kellie

thanks for the warm welcome. what a God send it is to meet another
parent with a child of a similar age going through the same thing. The NT
parenting boards i've been going to are just full of hug smilies and people
who dont' know what to say when i talk about Leo. It is not a criticism to
them, because how could they really know how we feel.

When is "andrew" due and when is Luke's birthday (given that he is close
in age to my Leo)? what age did you notice that there was something
different about Luke? Also, I still get confused about the difference
between PDD and ASD.

TIA
xHi everyone,

I'm 32, and mum to two wonderful boys: Sonny and Leo. We live in Kent,
United Kingdom.

My elder son, Sonny displayed a number of Autistic traits in his second
year of life, which turned out to be simple language delay. Once he
learned to speak all of his delays disappeared. When we were going
through this period with Sonny we used to look at happy, smiley, Leo who
was happy to amuse himself for hours and think about what an easy baby
he was. At 12 months his development all but stopped. From then on Leo
picked up very few skills and appeared to withdraw within himself. His
eye contact diminished and his play became very repititive and his
interest very narrow. He had major issues with textures in food and had
no language or non-verbal communication skills whatsoever. He is now
28 months old and little has improved. Unfortunately over the last year
we lived in a part of the UK that had a seriously oversubscribed early
intervention service so Leo was getting practically no therapy. We have
since moved to a new area and the ball seems to be rolling, but still at a
slow pace. We have an appt with the local pediatrician, we still have to
wait for a speech and occupational therapy assessment and he will then
get the official diagnosis. At the moment he appears to be on the lower-
functioning/severe end of the spectrum. We are about to introduce the
Picture Exchange in the hope to get communication going.

I've been a member of standard parenting boards for a while and have
been searching for a good Autistic Parenting message board. Looks like
I've finally found it.

Looking forward to meeting you all and hearing about your kids. Hi Linda & welcome to the board!

My son is Luke and he's 27 mos old.  He was dx'd as PDD-NOS about 3 weeks ago.  He's been getting early intervention for about 4 mos (though I'm not sure it's done much for him) and he just began speech and occupational therapies about 2 weeks ago.  I wish you the best of luck in your endeavors with PECs to encourage communication from Leo!  I completely understand how frustrating and emotioanlly difficult it can be for your ds to essentially stop communicating with you. :(

You'll find (I hope) much support and useful info on this message board!  God bless and we're happy to have you join us!

Kellie
