Hi Gtto,
I am sorry to target you with this question, I know that answering these is tiresome or tedious for you. I will try to be direct and if you have already posted an explanation about this on your blog or anywhere- I would love to know your thoughts. Please simply post a link if possible- I always read your links.
My question is- As I understand it, you are nonverbal, speech just isn't a natural mode of communication for you. As a teacher I am stunned by your exceptional literacy, given that you are nonverbal. I am curious if you can describe how you learned to read? And of course, associated closely with this, how you learned not only to write, but to use all of the correct grammatical structures, etc. that you use. Was all of this a natural gift for you?
So that you don't feel too exhausted by me, I will tell you why I ask. I have a 3 year old little boy I am tutoring. His mom is extremely concerned about why he does not talk, when he will talk, etc. I am encouraging her not to worry (though moms always do- it is their job). I am focusing on signing with him, which he seems to like and picks up really quickly. I love that he can use his sign language to assert himself. I suspected (due to his love of numbers and letters) that he might also be reading. He is. He can pick out the most bizarre words (that is, it would be bizarre for an NT 3 y.o. child to do this) but I laid out a bunch of words like, computer, pizza, purple, etc. and he can identify most of them if I ask him which one is "computer" etc. I know about hyperlexia, etc. I am NOT trying to label him. I am insanely curious as to the best things to focus on in his tutoring. I want to know if what I am doing is simply exposing the gifts he naturally has, or if (maybe by accident) I am doing anything to help him learn these things.
