Hallees mom, try vistraril or generic form attarax. It can be used for tension and anxiety and does help with sleep at night. Its also used for allergies, but doesn't have the hyper side effect as benedryl. Please look into it as it does not have any dangerous side effects, but it is only by prescription. My son is on it and its helping him. I took him off all antipsychotics as it worsened him and made other dangerous issues come up. He's only on strattera, clonidine, and attarax. I'm also doing supplements. Its a work in progress and he's improving. My son did take abilify and it caused a dystonic reaction in him. Be careful and go on www.PDR.com for any info on meds. I hope all goes well!!! Hello everyone, I'm new here. My name is Allyson and I'm the mother of Hallee, age 9. Hal is autistic and has been on Prozac for about two years for anxiety and ocd with no great results. In the last few months, she's been getting more and more anxious, sleeping less and the OCD is really getting bad now. I made an appt. with our med specialist here in Bangor (Maine) and went yesterday. She suggested Abilify on top of the Prozac. I said let me think about it and came home and started researching (and scaring myself silly) Abilify. The first thing I noticed was a lot of sites saying there was a danger in using the two together. And the Abilify seemed to be prescribed more for combativeness and aggressiveness than for OCD or anxiety. I called my pharmacist this morning and she said that yes, there were problems with combining Abilify and Prozac. She also said (she's known us for years) that she was surprised that the Dr. would prescribe an a-typical anti-psychotic first without trying to change the SSRI first. She said that Prozac tends to have a "Poop out" stage in some kids where it just stops working after a couple of years, regardless of dosage. She suggested researching Zoloft, which is more widely used for anxiety and OCD symptoms and was much safer than the Abilify. My question to you all is this....Does anyone else use Zoloft for their child's OCD/anxiety? I've put in a call to the med specialist to request being allowed to try the Zoloft first before going for the big guns like Abilify. It seems to me that if we can lower Hal's anxiety, the OCD will relent and vica verca. I'd really appreciate any thoughts you guys have on this.
My son is not OCD, but has severe anxiety. He is on Paxil. He has been on it since 3rd grade and is now in 6th. We have only adjusted the dose once and it has been a mircle for him. He is also on Abilify. But that is for anger and agression issues. He sees the doc every three months for updates on his meds. The only issue we have had with Abilify is weight gain. I would ask to try a different med for the anxiety first. Abilify can be good for what it is intended, it works well for Adam, but I would try to get the anxiety under control first. Just my opinion. Hi Dawn, I kind of feel the same way, if we can try something for the anxiety and OCD first, I'd really like to. I'm still waiting on a call back from the med specialist, so wish us luck.
