AugmentinHey all, I have a sick boy this week. He has a Upper respiratory Infection, the doc put him on Augmentin. This is my son's first time ever with an antibiotic, Has anyone elses been on this one? Any "behavioral" side effects that I should know about. I know about all of the side effects that are listed on the package but I want to know how it has effected other children on the spectrum. I know all kids are different but I would like to hear from any of you that have had to give this one to your kids. Its actually a fancy name for Amoxicillin, but the company calls it Augmentin. I've never noticed any behaviorial side effects with any antibiotics, including Augmentin. Augmentin and Zithromax were the hardest on the stomach, though.Actually, Amoxicillin (A member of the Penicillin family of drugs) is a first line medication and Augmentin is a second line. Augmentin is actually a combination drug containing Amoxicillin and Clavulanic Acid. In some areas of the country, docs skip using plain Amoxicillin because the local bacteria have built up a resistance to it. That is something that occurs from the overprescription of antibiotics...I have always told my patients that any drug can cause any side effect in any individual person. However, with Augmentin, the most common issues are loose stools and stomach upset. If this occurs, make sure the drug is taken with food (forget about taking antibiotics on an empty stomach; I'd rather the sick person take the antibiotic with food than avoid taking it because of stomach upset). I have never had a case where it made a child or adult sleepy or hyper. People who are allergic usually get itching and a rash. Hope this helps.I had to take augmentin for 30 days for a cellulitis infection and ended up with C-DIf. That sucked bad. But hardly anyone will ever be on augmentin for that long for that very reason, I just had extenuating circumstances which prevented me from being able to be hospitalized.
Weird - as a second option they did not give Fabian Augmentin for his ear infection the second time around, they gave him omnicef (he had an ear infection for one week then one week off and then again on the third week) - none of my kids have ever had augmentin My son can take amoxicillin but not augmentin; aside from the severe diarrhea, after a few days he broke out in hives; but no behavioral effectAndrewsmommy, are you a doctor? Nurse? Just curious, your response was so complete. and you used the word "case"...I am a family practice doctor but have not been working outside of the home for the past year. It is very difficult in my area to find part-time work that benefits both the employer and employee when it comes to family medicine. My last job was "part-time" but I spent equivalent to full time working...just squeezed into fewer days. Prior to that I was a young and idealistic solo doc but when I got pregnant with Andrew, I had complications, and although I tried to make it work after he was born, I had to let the practice, and my credit, go. I wouldn't change that decision, however. And when my last year to year contract was not renewed as I was "low man on the part-time totem pole", I was initially upset, but now I realize that it was the greatest gift to be able to spend all of this time with Andrew and to learn everything that I can about ASD...Bet you didn't expect this long of an epistle!Alex had augmentin once. First, it tastes awful and I had a horrible time just getting it down. Then it gave him severe diaherra. No behavior problems though. I just lie and say that he is allergic whenever it is offered. My son has had this several different times..with no bad reactions. Good Luck!!! If his is sick to begin with and his belly is sick from the medicine he is on, it might make sense that his behaviors are increasing, because the poor guy doesn't feel well. Augmentin always did a number on my little guy's tummy!! thanks Everyone!! I would have responded sooner but its been hard to get my posting time in with a little sick one. We're getting to the "messy poop" stage now. He is seeming to tolerate it well, although I wish he would eat more. So far he's drinking more juice and applesauce and a snickerdoodle(cinnamon) cookie is about all he will eat. It's sad, the poor guy has never been sick and he really got dumped on this time. Thanks to everyone for your support.![]() |
