Social Security for Autistic children | Autism PDD

Share

autism and being a one income house hold should also qualify you for medicaid w/would cover the cost of drugs . Does "autism" include pdd-nos, generally?SSI , also if you are a grandparent who has legal custody of a child with autism, they do NOT count your income, only the childs.  It is alot of paperwork but with preserverance, you will get SSI !  I live in Alabama, but in alot of states you can get advocacy help if there is a problem.OK...someone help me out here. What is the difference between SSI and SSD???Terri, you can go to  socialsecurity.gov and they will explain it for you.

THANKS

I was interviewed and as soon as income was considered the interview was stopped right there-so we ended up not qualifying:( They went SOLEY of my dh's income. They said we qualified for the disability, but not because of our income?????

 Love ya,

I just talked to an Attorney that is have a woman in my area that does only this. She is a registered Nurse and an Attorney. SSD is a federal program so we should all apply under the same guide lines. I'll keep you posted when she calls me!

Sure Tammy. As soon as I hear something I'll let ya know. BTW. The attorney that I just spoke to told me that if you are denied and later accepted because they were wrong, the $$ is retro active to when you first filed.

I think I'm gonna make a trip to the SS office tomorrow and start this whole thing. I was denied for any insurance because of income but I have never applied for disability.

Hello Everyone,

Does anyone know if Autistic kids are eligable for Social Security?

I olny ask because I am on a health insurance where I have to pay first  then get reimbursed 80% back and his meds are outragous even with the 80% back the risperedall is almost 0.00. I am at Stay at home mom and we only have one income that is crazy for us.

Thanks for the help if you know anything

Stephanie

YES, autism qualifies for SSI.

and WELCOME!  It is good to have you here.

HI ALL:

My son is austisic and had adhd, he is in the spectrum of pdd

pervassive devolpmental disorder. When my husband got on social Security Disability due to a disability he has, they pulled our son off of the SSI and we had to put him on chips cause he couldn't get medicaid without being on ssi.

But I also work online, but don't make a lot. But there is no way for me to go to work and take care of my son at the same time.

I have started working for ChaCha it is a search engine and you are a guide to help people with what they are looking for in a search, their are searches like for autism, adhd, children with special needs, asperger's just about anything you need to know about.

If you become a guide they pay between 5.00-10.00 an hour.

I just applied a few weeks ago. They told me it will take up to 120 days for an answer. They also asked no questions about my income. They said it was based only on the disabled persons income, which of course is 0. After all, he's not even 3 yet!  I would assume this is a federal program, being Social Security and all, I don't know why the qualifications would be different for some.

WOW...what a change in stories you get from the same federal program. DOES IT change from state to state?? I was told you have to make under ,000./yr. I was also denied MCHIP which I believe is the same as the national CHIPS program for Maryland.

I think I should call an attorney tomorrow and get some better answers. I thought it should be like Jan said, the child has NO INCOME.

I probably won't as well but I may still applyIt is based on income, but since we have so many kids, we qualify for lots of things.I've heard horror stories about SSI, though.  Things such as if you start making more money, not only do they stop SSI but they want you to pay back what you've been given.

The validity to that is suspect but I wouldn't put it past an incompetent government to do something so ridiculous.

Here in Fl, if you qualify for SSI, then you automatically get Medicaid as well. That covers speech, OT, PT and any prescriptions meds your child needs. Lifesaver for us...

Based on your income you could be eligible for a check every month to help with the extra expenses that go along with a child with autism.yes, autism and pddnos are covered by ssi, go with your proof and your income stuff and you should get on :)I was thinking about doing this.  But she isn't on any meds.  What else does ssi cover?

medicaid covers all meds, speech, OT, dr. appts, dentist appts., eye appt...everything. I don't know what I would do without it!

so is it based on income?

Be careful though if you have a Medicaid Waiver.  I was told if you get denied SSI, then you cannot receive Medicaid either.

We were in the process of applying for both and were told to put the SSI on hold.  SSI's "disability" criteria is tougher than Medicaid's.
so is it based on income?
It's based more on assets than income, but income is factored in.  We don't qualify

Let me tell you our story~My sister kept telling me to apply and I kept saying I didn't want to even though I can't work because even now my son only goes to school part time. Finally when he was 5 I relented and applied. It is a very lengthy application and you have to provide all the evaluations etc. (Make sure your evals by doctors, PHD's are preferred, are signed by the dr because we had to go back and get them with signatures). My sister lives in Massachusetts and works as a social worker and families there with a child with autism get a weekly ssi check based on the disability. We live in Maine and it is based first on disability and then contingent on the parent's income. So, we were denied after about 6mos of working and waiting. The person from the ssi office told me to file an appeal which I should have done right away but I didn't. Then 2yrs later we decided to apply again and after going through the process again and adding the new health issues and evals and seeing a doctor from the ssi office our son was considered disabled under the SS system. We got a check which was retroactive from the second time we applied ( covered almost a year). Our income fluctuates because of overtime pay so I have to submit his pay stubs to the ssi office every month. Some months we get a check and some we don't but whatever we get I am grateful for the help. I have the checks directly deposited into a separate account in my name for him and whenever I withdraw I have to keep a log of how I spend the money in case ssi wants to check. This is what they told me to do.

It was and is a bit of a pain but the extra help is appreciated. Hope this helps. Merry

my first born had spinabiffida,he passed away at 16

We were left with 7000 dollars in dept after he died,we had to get a loan to pay it all off.
