Our son is 16 and has HF autism.  We have been told recently by his therapist that he probably will never be able to live alone completely independently.  I am a nervous wreck.  I do not know what programs or assistance is out there.  We are in Kentucky and I don't know  if he will go to voc. school or what.  He does not drive.  High school just wants to get him out of there.  All the programs I have looked into do not apply to him or he does not fit the criteria.  I am afraid he will graduate and we will be no where with him and he will no longer be under our health insurance.  We do not get help from anywhere.  We know we have to appy for partial guardianship when he gets 18.  We also have a daughter 13 with pdd nos and another 10 with add and anxiety issues.  We are part of two genetic studies and do not no where to turn.  The stess is really getting to me. Any advice or guidance would be greatly appreciated. If you child is considered disabled, you can keep him on your health insurance as long as they live with you.   The school should also be helping you with transition planning.  It should be in his IEP starting at age 14.  They will be able to help with vocation school etc. You should be able to apply for Medicaid to cover health issues and for SSI which would give you a check every month epecially if he doesnt work after 18.

My heart really goes out to you. I am part of a military family stationed in Germany, and we struggle to get anything here too. We are looking at other options. I finally decided to take the ABA courses to get my license to help my own son since the military is worhtless when it somes to health problems that cannot really be explained. Once again, good luck and do not let people kick ya while your down. I find that hard to do at times too. Sometimes I have a good cry and it tends to help for a little bit!!!!
