IM A HAIRDRESSER,TO HELP ALL | Autism PDD

My stepmom has offered to take ds for his first haircut today! Your timing is great. We decided he might be better w/out me there. I have always just held him down while he screamed to try to trim his hair best I could. But after the disaster that resulted last time, I stopped cutting his hair. And now he has his 2 yr B-day party Sat (TURNED 2 TODAY!) and his hair is way long and sticking up all over. He needs a cut. Stepmom, who has an autistic son my age, said she will take him and if it turns into something really bad she won't push him too much. I will let her know of your suggestions. THANKS!

Amber

Hey Amber Happy Birthday to your son (Im sorry I dont recall his name)! My brother's birthday is also today!

Cyndie thanks for the info!

Thanks Cyndie.... those are GREAT suggestions.... and Hopefully this will help All the parents with the haircutting issues. LOL seems to be a new post about haircuts everyday.... from now on I say we referr them to this post.

YOUR WELCOME SARAH,...I WISH U LUCK W/UR DAUGHTERS NXT HAIRCUT...AND IM HOPIN EVERYONE CAN REFER TO THIS POST ANY QUESTIONS JUST ASK ME YOU OR ANYONE CAN PM ME SO I WILL RESOND OR EMAIL ME AT CYNDIE9404@AOL.COM I have seen this so much on here about haircutting issues..so I hope I can help a little as much as I can .. IVE BEEN CUTTING HAIR FOR 15YRS. AND BEFORE MY MEDICAL LV. I WAS THE ONE THAT USED TO CUT THE SPECIAL NEEDS KIDS. The other stylists didn't have the approach i did or they weren't patient. If you can connect w/kids any kind special, good, bad,or uncooperative.then thats THE KEY...ITS SCARY FOR ALL KIDS TO SEE SCISSORS IN YOUR FACE

I think talking to our kids first is a must. Mine doesn't like the experience of haircuts at all. I used to take him to the barber shop with his brothers. The barber (always John) could bribe him with tootsierolls and cut fast. I still had to hold him down for his bangs.

John gave my little guy one to many tootsierolls and Takoda associated haircuts with tummy aches.

Now he sees the same hairstylist that I go to. She talked to him first and gave him a talking alphabet toy that her kids had outgrown. He loves her. Lisa told me she can't beleive he's autistic because he is so good for her. She told me he was just gifted because he asked questions about the chair and crawled under her sink and had her run the water so he could hear it run through the pipes.

The next time she saw it because she had a full salon he had to be difficult. She has learned don't schedule him on a busy day.

I do feel lucky that we found somebody with a salon in her house and the patience to put him at ease first it does make all the difference.

Hi Cindie,

thanks for your post; some very valuable tips in it!

Take care,

Jo.

Just thinking about hair cuts stress me out LOL...my guy hates the clippers too, the noise vibration freaks him out so my barber only uses it to even out his sides and back at the very end, on the lowest setting...and if Nick is having a really bad time w/ the cut then we just say..oh well, good enough! lol...good idea about the comb in the water instead of the spray bottle, I think that's what sets my guy off...actually just seeing the barbershop he starts in on "oh no no no no no!!!!" and starts draggin' his feet...I hate when its time to go...but he needs one sooo bad, he looks like a little mop head right now, a gorgeous little mom head! LOL

hugs,

Ali ps...where do you live Cyndie, I'll bring Nicholas by for a cut on Saturday...LOL...I WISH!!!

Your welcome.

I also found doing a social story before we when to the Hairdresser really helped. And giving a reward after the haircut.

As soon as the Hairdresser is finish, Luke jumps out of the chair and says MCDONALD'S.

Regards,

Trish
IM GLAD THIS was helpful..ali well im in PA and i luv doing haircuts at home..lol...do alot of kids where i live, and also noone here has $$$ so barter system..the teens i usually help them out with prom updos..and as far as my guy is..CHRISTIAN WENT ON A GEL,SPRITZ KIK 2WKS STRAIGHT THEN SAYS MOMMY CUT MY HAIR BOLD.LOL..LIKE DADDY N UNCLE RUSSEL,I SAID WAIT..U DO,,HESLIKE YES,SO SUN.after he begged alday i gave in and gave him a clipper allover cut..looks so cute..but num.2attach.not scalping him..he looks younger..yaeh..lol...luv it..he said wen i start workin at shop again can he come thee and have haircut..maybe hed be a good ex.for all kids..lol.you r all welcomeMY son who has PDD NOS started out going to the local hairdresser when he was 2 years not diagnosed yet. The last straw was when he kicked the stool over and only had half his hair cut and the hairdresser giving me a look as "can't you control your son". So then I brought a pair of clippers and cut my sons hair for about 2 years. (in a headlock). He need medication for his anxieties and that is when I notice he was quite in the chair, when the medication started to work.

I then started taking my son to a hairdresser who worked from home. We did this for about a 1 year. My son is 9 years old now and he needed to be able to go and have his haircut in a regular Barber. I have now found a great Barber who knows him when we come in. He is very understanding. And is now able to cut his hair without any problems at all. But I tell you I have a few grey hairs myself over the experiences of haircutting.

Thank you so much, Lukey who i care for every friday. His mother was telling me that her cousin use to do it, but now its a two person Job her Husband sits Lukey in His lap as Lukey mum cuts, during that time he screams his little heart out(Nonverbal), after his haircut he his all happy as if nothing happen. What amazes mum he loves having his hair washed. Do you think if mum started cutting his hair during bath time would their be a slight difference.
