Starting ABA Therapy | Autism PDD

Share

Yes...in fact, at the beginning of our ABA program, the behaviors were terrible and I second guessed whether or not it was right...we see an increase in behavior every time we change therapists or programs...it has always died down but every child is different. I stuck with it because we saw tremendous changes in him - for the better (that was OUR experience...every child/situation is different)..

Best of luck..

Hi,

When you start your program you will most likely see an increase in behaviors. This is called an extinction burst. Your consultant should set parameters around these.

My son has RECOVERED from autism because of using ABA. He is fourteen now goes to public school has high honors and is on the football team. If I can be of any help please email me. I am a Parent Mentor Resource Consultant and I travel to help families and their home programs.

God Bless

We started Anthony's ABA program about 2 months ago.  He was pretty agressive with them the first 4 weeks and now he is totally into the routine of it.  His language has improved loads in just 2 months.  I really believe in this program as I've seen results.   They have taught him many practical things as well.  He now knows his phone number and address!!  They were completely prepared for the aggression and handled it with professionalism AND compassion.  I can't say enough about ABA.

Edited to add:  I just want to add that he also enjoys much of his ABA now.  You can hear him laughing with his therapists.

Mason always goes through terrible acting out when we start something new. It is temporary until he adjusts to the change. He also pushes therapist MUCH more than he will me. I feel terrible for some of them. Not all, but some. The difference is, the good ones know what is going on and accept it and roll with it, the not so great ones act like I have a demon child and that working with him is an ordeal, those are the ones I don't mind him showing his stubborn side to, it is a good lesson for them.... I am certain that my son isn't the only child on the spectrum that is going to behave this way!
SOmetimes kids DO get upset at first if there are demands put on them.  But what is the alternative? Letting them NOT learn. ABA is usually pretty fun because it is filled with rewards.  And it's the ONLY technique for teaching autistic kids that has SCIENTIFIC research to back it up.  Your child is VERY lucky to be getting this therapy and enough of it to make a real difference while his brain is young enough to be malleable.

New to the site.  My son was diagnosed at 2 years with PDD-NOS, "because they had to put him somewhere", as the doctor stated because of his lack of expressive and receptive language.  He has been receiving speech and special ed 3xs each a week since he was 18 months, he is now 2 1/2.  Next week he will start at an ABA school for 5 1/2 hrs per day, 5xs/week.  He has very few behaviors, but I am worried that when the therapists start pushing he we are going to see a lot more.  Did anyone see negative behavior escalate after beginning ABA?
