I have a "sniffer" too...he's 8 and it started about 3 months ago.  Right now he has a scar under his nose because he was trying to put the cap on a marker, while sniffing it and cut/pinched his skin.

Sam has a light scar on his forehead from rug burn because when we got new carpet he wouldn't stop sniffing it.

My 8 yo sniffs things as well ,Mostly people ,Like a dog lol,we once lost his dad at the Mall and he starts sniffing the air then said did Dad have a shower this morning ?lol.

He smells you if you hug him and will often comment on how things smell, but his big thing is hair,he has always wanted to smell hair and sneaks a wif of his friends hair if he gets the chance.

What helped for us is a scented wrist band,I buy sports bands and soak them in his favorite scent witch is vanilla  I use Vanilla scented body wash and let them dry.

I wish sports bands worked for Tori.  Unfortunately, she ends up chewing on them.  The scented chewelry wrist bands worked for a bit, it just looked like she was gnawing her hand off all the time.

Beccaposie, that is a GENIUS idea!  I could spray my watch band with vanilla body spray and have something to smell!  I love it!  Thank you!

My BIL, 26 years old sniffs everything.  My MIL says he's always done this even when he was little.  My BIL explain much like the above poster, that it's just something he has to do like an itch.

I guess my only advise it try to not deter necessary but teach him when/where it's appropriate.

You all have provided some great suggestions and it is comforting to know it seems to be a very common thing with our kiddos. I guess, I just have to try different things to see what works and can redirect him. The hands in pants/sniff hands one is the first one we've got to overcome!

Thanks again, everyone!
