CJ has for the past month to month-and-a-half developed what I guess you'd call a stim. He has to sniff EVERYTHING. From food, to something placed in his hand that is not edible to (and sorry, this is disgusting), to his hand when he pulls it out of his pants (another issue we're dealing with). But, it only happens when the smell is on him (ie, something placed in his hand or something he is doing with his hands). He does not walk up to a chair and sniff it or anything like that.
At Halloween, he had to sniff every piece of candy he took from people or was placed in his hands. When I catch him with his hands in his pants, he pulls out his hand and smells it. Anytime we give him something that seems new to him or not so familiar, he has to sniff. (if we give him, say, a french fry, he doesn't need to sniff it). The sniffing is with edible and non-edible stuff.
So, is this a stim? If so, is this a good thing devlopementally or a sign of something going haywire for him? Obvoiusly the hands in pants sniffing concerns me alot.

No ideas but when you find some please share with me! My NT? 3 almost 4 y/o cousin feels the need to sniff everything. Mostly stuff lie lotion, candles, shampoo, soap, deodorant, etc. We cut out smelly pages of magazines and give them to her to put in her things for this. Could you try something like that? They are easy to find and in most magazines. Those little sample pages. Or maybe smelly markers? I am open to any advice.

No ideas, but my son is a "sniffer" too. I just assumed it was part of his sensory seeking behavior. I'm interested to hear what others have to say.

According to our deveopmental pedi and our OTs, this is a sensory issue. Our 4 yo does this with EVERYTHING and EVERYONE. It drives us absolutely bonkers. At the moment, we're trying scented chewy tubes with the hope that the darn things will satisfy both her need to chew and her need to sniff. Fingers crossed.

Lyssa--Hadn't thought of that. Do you think if he got pleasant smells it would discourage him from smelling everything else?
Tiffany--when did the sniffing start for your son?
Phoenix--I've kind of thought of it as a sensory issue, too. Just wish I knew how to get him off that kick! I actually thought today of trying to contact his former wonderful OT who saw him under EI and through CPSE until he entered preschool 2 years ago. She used all kinds of sensory therapy for him when he needed it for body slamming, spinning, etc. She might have some ideas as to the why and how to overcome it. I'll post if I get anything useful.

I used to smell everything that was given to me when I was little. I still get the urge (it's a lot like an itch that begs to be scratched, when I think about it to try to explain it). I outgrew its heyday though, when I was 5-6 and younger.

Autti,
Snoopy is my favorite character!
Super Trouper,
You outgrew it by 5- 6 years-old. There's hope for CJ yet!

I outgrew the worst of it. It's still like an itch that I want to scratch when someone gives me something, and I'm sure I still do it sometimes. I have a really hypersensitive nose, too.
Just as an aside, talking about it makes it worse, apparently!

I have one who is a sniffer, but it's just who he is. I can think of any possible way to get him not too, he just doesn't understand. Please stay away from scented markers though. They are the stupidest thing ever invented. What a way to teach kids to huff!
